Have you never heard of the placebo effect? Give someone a sugar pill, tell them it's a magic cure for their illness, and voila, they get better. It's certainly not the sugar pill that's healing them. It's their belief that what they're taking is so awesome, that it can't fail.

The power of positive thinking. In this particular case it's the will to survive to see her grandson become president as opposed to giving up and lying down to die.
