Default Writing my dissertation on the history of American narcottics use

This is one of those, humanities or drugs posts, I'm not sure which forum it belongs in, so I'll dump it here.

I am writing my dissertation on the development of the American drug tackling sub-cultures along with looking at the cause and the effect of legislation against the consumption of narcotics. I'd probably be starting in the nineteenth century and the use of opium along with the words of DeQuincy. I'd also be looking at the jazz era with Charlie Parker and Miles Davis, but noting how the drugs came with the music e.g. Davis and Parker were great musicians, it wasn't the use of drugs that made them great. This would be followed with look at the beat I'd end in the 60s as this is when many of the other recreational drugs of today were beginning to be used e.g. MDMA, LSD.

Does anyone here recommend any literature to study and other points to look at. Webpages, primary sources and secondary sources - which already includes Fear and Loating (as it is a cultural history essay), On the Road and addiction journals. Any advice?

If you don't mind me asking. I'm really not trying to sound like an ass. just a bit curious.

Why write about the American culture? why not write it of the same subject just a different country? say something like Ireland?

Because he lives in America? The many roots that are entrenched in drugs and America? Man this is some interesting shit.

Good luck dude.

I took a module in American cultural history last year, the professor wrote his thesis on narcotics use and is generally a cool guy, figured he'd help a lot.
