Default USB as hard drive?

my neighbor "thinks" he can build computers. he gave me one that doesnt work ,with a simple look(i know next to nothing about building computers, anything beyond installing RAM is unknown to me) and it was because theres no hard drive in it.

now, assuming everything else its hooked up correctly, is there a way that i could put a flash drive in the USB and install linux from a live cd?

and what distribution of linux would work best for this? im planning on using my old 512mb flash .

perfectly possible.

I'd give slitaz a try, it's pretty tiny, yet has a nice gui. And you'll want all the room you can spare.

Yeah, you can use a LiveCD to run the system, or use something like this for Fedora on USB: https://fedorahosted.org/liveusb-creator

This is all assuming the machine will in fact boot from the CDROM drive or a device in a USB port.

What sort of machine is it, do you have a model number or a serial number from the motherboard, anything?
