Default If you had 5k to spend building up an engine, what would you do?

Personally, I would start with a Chevy 350.

Throw in a 400 crank, to make it a 383 stroker.

I'll probably be up to about 1,000 by now, depending on how much I spent on the engine.

High-flow carb
Lumpy cam
Nice exhaust system
New headers

I would probably have a couple hundred dollars left over for miscellaneous spending.

What would you all do?

AAN or 3B + GT42R (also need are rods, pistons, piping for turbo, and on the whole, the parts can be obtained used for 5k or less)
old audi i-5 been around forever, internals arent too expensive, the majority of the cost would be the turbo itself. easy 1000 hp capable. might have to rob or maim to get enough to make the engine last a while at that level.
garret turbo kits are cheap for this motor, hell you can get 550+ hp for less than $2k with all new hardware http://tinyurl.com/6qxkho
http://www.034motorsport.com/oscthumbwm/w/375/h/281/q/95/f/jpg/fltr/wmi|phpThumb/watermarks/034watermark|C|20|0/hash/7367305749781adc48316ee2d203b337/src/images/gt40r-01.jpg

or realistically, the new ASP kit thats out for the audi/vw 2.0t fsi. gt3076 turbo, fueling, and internals for that price, looking at a reliable 450 or so hp, depending on boost, kit is still in the final works for the a4 setup. (the big thing is the software, and the injectors with whole fsi direct injection system)

or for pure craziness, something like the GT55R turbo on a v-8 or cummins turbo diesel, 1600 hp capable

Bored out A series to 1380cc, supercharged, all lightened and balanced, some fancy head, twin Weber DC0E-40s. Sitting on top of a 5 speed, Jack Knight full straight cut gearbox.

Wait a minute, the gearbox would cost $5000 alone...

3.5 Rover V8 with ported gas-flowed heads, eight downdraft Weber carbs on RPi manifolds and straight-through pipes. Oh yeah. Cool

Oh, and a lumpier cam, strengthened crankshaft and lighter pistons. Probably also need a 101 radiator to take all that heat away...

Red 202ci block with a blue motor 12 port closed chamber head shaved for 10:1 compression, double valve springs, bigger valves, ported and polished and some roller rockers.
Blue counterweighted crank, hot angry cam with a power band from about 2500rpm to 6000rpm, flat top pistons, starfire rods and tripple webber carbs. All in front of a supra 5 speed gearbox and in my torana.

245ci Hemi 6, 265 PnP Head (Bigger Valves and a more open chamber to reduce compression) Mod Cam, modified injection unit of an XF Fairmont Ghia suited to fit Chrysler, Turbo (second hand off another make of car to reduce costs) and other assd bits,
I'll do most of the modifications myself.
reducing costs again.
Hopefully find me a 2 door Avenger to fit it into.
(The Cars not included in the price)
That should leave me with enough left over cash from the 5K to get totally shit faced and crash it for the lolz.

5.2 Litre Rover V8 (http://www.v8engines.com/engine-3.htm)

The "Full" engine.

Then I'd sit it in one of these (which would be where it came from in the first place): http://cartersutherland.com/Rover-title.JPG

Then I'd wet myself with pleasure.

Then I'd save up some more money and try and wedge in a twin-screw supercharger from a Jaguar XK8

Default Re: If you had 5k to spend building up an engine, what would you do?

Either of two builds dropped into my accord:

Honda C32A 2.7l V6:
-Ported and polished heads
-decked block
-forged rods
-forged high compression pistons (to bump compression to a healthy 11:1
-upgraded valve springs and retainers
-custom individual throttle body setup from suzuki GSXR throttles
-custom headers
-haven't figured out ECU
-S-AFC II
-nitrous oxide
-acura legend manual transmission
I want a screaming NA V6. Power doesn't need to be much higher than 300 to the wheels, it would go into a lightweight front-drive car.

This won't cost me $5k, but this is the current build I'm starting. Honda F22B2 2.2 I4:
-Stock block
-ARP head studs
-F23A intake manifold, ported and gasket matched (bigger plenum and runners)
-bigger throttle body
-ported head
-upgraded valvetrain
-Eaton M62 supercharger (custom mounting brackets)
-Front mount intercooler
-JVT Racing header
-Bisimoto turbo camshaft
-bigger injectors
-Greddy Emanage Ultimate

Should be good for at least 250WHP.

I respect your build, which from someone not that familiar with Hondas enignes looks solid, but the only thing a 250hp transverse mount engine is good for is powering a rear engined RWD kit car. Front wheel drive sports car is almost an oxymoron.

Yeah, understeer is lame. Just have to be careful on the throttle in a corner. But it's a nice car that is very capable if given some power. It already handles extremely well, stops well, and is about average for acceleration (around 7.2 to 60). With the added power, I should get to 60 in under 6 seconds, and have that great supercharger whine.

It's a 2.2L 4 cylinder that makes more torque than horsepower, so it's in no way gutless. It should be able to surprise some sports cars on the highway.

Before I catch flak for wanting to build a honda, let me say this: I don't understand the import vs. musclecar debate. Both like to go fast, one just uses technology while the other uses brute force. There is something to be said for both, and neither is better than the other because they are different. A honda tuner is no less of a gearhead than a muscle car tuner is.

Thats gonna be a lot more than 5k sunshine.

The carbs are like 2k by themselves. Rebuilding an engine costs 3k, then you have all those nice parts. I'd say 10k gets you an Aussie six with 200 + hp.

Superchargers are cheap though.

P.S. 186s rev higher and freer

It's the result of a bent clutch. It there isn't rotational force exerted on it at any give time it will start to rattle like a motherfucker. I'm probably going to get a new clutch soon since I want to stick this on my bike and make a moped.

EDIT: On a side note, I posted that video on facebook for some of my other engine buddies to see, and this dumb bitch commented on it and said "Nice Muffler. NO WAIT! How did you run the muffler without the engine???"

And the Premium 265 puts out 210 which is just their lux base engine.

And a shit load cheaper and stronger to get more HP out of.

During the time of the RT the fuel crisis was on and to get past regulations they tuned them down. (Just an interesting fact from the 70's) :)

Thats gonna be a lot more than 5k sunshine.

The carbs are like 2k by themselves. Rebuilding an engine costs 3k, then you have all those nice parts. I'd say 10k gets you an Aussie six with 200 + hp.

Superchargers are cheap though.

P.S. 186s rev higher and freer

lolwut?
I rebuilt my 202 including machining for around $1500. You're right weber carbs are stupidly expensive, but if you can get at least close to a 200hp holden 6 for $5000 then you should stick to pushbikes. Also its a common misconception that 186s rev more than 202s. My dad and a mate have 186s, and they can't touch my 202 when it comes to revs.

The key to doing stuff up is to use ebay and not to insist on brand new parts or unnecessary work where it isn't needed.

Yeah but IIRC, justace is a stickler for not half assing it.

So you guys may be talking about different qualities of 200 hp :P

That's fair enough, but you can still do stuff on the cheap and not half ass it. The lightweight pistons i bought were brand new and $120 from ebay as opposed to $350 new anywhere else. Sure I didn't get a warranty or anything but they're pistons so it doesn't really matter.

Oh shit, this sounds interesting but then again I've been spending too much time on Yahoo Answers, making possibly the longest answers in the history of the website.

I got pissed off with Yahoo Answers. I made a few good, informative posts about charging Li-ion batteries and the asker always ended up choosing some shitty "zomg it'll overcharge and blow up!!1!" answer instead.

This would probably exceed the $5k budget, but I'd like to build a twin-turbocharged and nitrous-equipped Slant Six one day, just to prove it can be done. There are no ready-made kits for such a thing, but I think it could be done. Ideally I'd put it in a late 60s Barracuda.

Quick question, would you recommend getting a used block or a brand new one?

Otherwise it's looking pretty expensive to build up the engine i want :)

Nothing wrong with an old block. People are still pulling the original engines out of 40 year old muscle cars (except, of course, those are getting rare as shit) to use the high quality iron block for big horsepower projects. No reason you can't get one, then get it re-sleeved or bored out. Journal blockages can be a bitch though.

ah an offy would be such a nice engine. if i had 30gs... cylinder head is made into the block meaning no headgasket. meaning can be boosted the fuck out.

back in the day in F1 it was the dominate motor, pushing 60 psi it made over 1000 hp, 15:1 compression. DOHC, 16v four

The Slant 6 is a strong engine, can take a bit of abuse.
I've seen these weberized, super charged and turbo'd I'd say its possible considering the castings pretty strong.
Stronger than a rotary hoe anyways.

I thought this was pretty cool

im pretty sure the street machine sss general motor they did up for 450 hp used a second hand 308, they gave the reason that the block will handle more power as it has been heated and cooled so much that the properties of the metal wont change anymore, where as a new block might, i dunno if it would really effect it that much but street machine sometimes get it right

That was an old 5.0L block. They're so strong the thing was stroked out to 383 then had some insane forced induction fitted.

The website I found that on said it was the black motor, but I think that might have been a mistake. I'd say it's a 304 not th 308 (both are 5.0Ls), because you'd want something like that to have 4 bolt mains in the very least as well as the 308 block has to be clearenced in order to stroke it out to 383. The 304 doesn't.

Nothing too big and fancy. 2.0L 4g63, new crank, acl bearings, carillo rods, cp pistons 8.5:1 arp stud kit, 1mm oversized valves, dual valve springs, 3rd gen lifters, jmf intake manifold, q45 throttle body, forced performance exhaust manifold, tial 40mm wastegate, gt3582 turbo, 1150cc injectors.

I might have went over budget if I bought all new parts. Some of that stuff I have lying around the garage or is already installed on the car. Not looking for tons of power. just something thats quick.

If I were him I think I would have meant new crank as in putting lightweight item so the revs build faster. Helps when your cars powerband is from 5000-7000rpm. Probably wants a nice strong one, too, seeing as he's get forced induction and no doubt wants to put 21psi through it if he could. If I were me a new crank would mean one that makes the pistons travel further and also be strong enough to take a lot of force.

Crank walk (crank moving side to side) is a common problem on the 4g63.

My balance shaft belt killed the original motor. I just got finished with a 6 bolt(produced from 1990-1992, no problem with the thrust bearings that caused the newer style 7 bolt to walk, built better, can handle more hp on stock internals. for those of you that dont know.) swap so I dont have to worry about crankwalk anymore. I did a 6 bolt block and crank, 1st generation big rods, 2nd generation 8.5:1 pistons(stock was 7.8:1) new bearings and rings, arp stud and bolt kit, cometic head gasket, ported the head a little bit, 3rd gen hydraulic lash adjusters, 1g exhaust manifold and throttle body, 2g throttle body elbow, 2g exhaust mani, 14b turbo, evo 3 o2 housing, 3" catless turboback exhaust, k&n intake, manual boost controller, boost gauge, and an aem uego.

Fuck that killed my bank account for a little while. Pics are in the "im a pirate" thread

Holy fucking shit man, I don't even know if I read that right. I'll try to translate it.

Thanks Mr.Smith. This is for all of you wannabe tuners:.. The reason for the two cars is plain and simply parts. Number one rule: don't start with a car that's hard to get parts for in your area. I'm pretty sure, in my case anyway, that a 22r, rc, rec, and even the20r's give the biggest bang for your buck. Fuck, you want to go get a straight 6 Toyota then port polish, stroker crank, cam, com (?), the whole 9 yards.. Keys Ignition/Spark, Intake, Fuel. Maybe a Powerglide if you want an auto trans?

I don't know if that's right, but it mostly makes sense. Good advice I guess.

I'm pretty sure in my case anyway a 22r,rc,rec,and even the20r's give biggest bang for your dollar.
Good reliable engine choice, plentiful, cheap to rebuild and easy to work on

You wanna straight 6. port polish stroker crank, cam com. the whole 9 yards
What happened to the 22r/rc/rec , 20r? Confused

SPARK,AIR,FUEL.

nah that must be a different one, the street machine sss general was an old 308 red motor block, stroked to a 355, and naturally aspirated, was a prize for signing up to street machine about 12 months ago and was about 400 horses, but this was in the aussie street machine (not sure if there is another one but its a possibility)

I followed the SSS General build in StreetMachine, so I know what you're talking about. This one is a different vehicle and built privately with donations from sponsors. Street Machine were doing a piece on rock solid bargain basement performance with the SSS General article, so I can see how you thought I was talking about that because it's a similar topic to this thread.

But there is more than one high powered 5.0L V8 you know..
..there are thousands; Some make a a few hundred horses, some make over a thousand horses, and there's everything in between.

The track record for SSS/Procomp stuff is pretty poor. $300 roller rockers of ebay for the holden 6, sounds great but they break and ruin your engine by clogging it with little bits of needle roller. 308 alloy heads apparently need thousands of prep before you can use them and be of benefit, which makes it easier just to use COME or other more expensive alloy heads and not work on them.
