Default Bamboo

I just have a fairly simple set of questions.

How well does bamboo grow in temperate areas like North Eastern United States?

Can it grow tall? If so how tall.

I was planning on maybe using it to build a little natural wall on the edge of my yard, because it grows so fast and spreads quite well I hear.

So it seems like it would be a good fast choice.
I would not mind maintaining it at all either to stop it from taking over the yard. So that isn't a problem.

bamboo grows very well in the northeastern usa. though i would refrain from planting any until next spring. the key is the roots.

bamboo will grow as tall as you let it. i put some in my uncles yard last spring and it has easily grown 8 feet high since then.

your heard correct it does grow fast an spreads well. so fast an so well you may find your self fightig for your yard in a few years. if you have the time/effort/money/skills. decide how much space you want to set aside for the bamboo. then dig a 3foot trench around this area an fill it with cement. this will keep the bammboo, which is a grass, from taking over your yard in a few years.

but yeah you can use it as a wall. thats why we put it in my uncles yard. to act as a bit of a privacy screen/wall.

he loves it. it looks great. you should do it to.

Thanks man. Great post. I can't wait for spring now. Damn neighbors always looking over the fence. A nice wall of bamboo will block them and make the yard nice looking.

Maintaining it is going to be the best part. Machete fodder that grows back! What could be better?

While I was living in the southeast I had a large, dense plot of bamboo seperating my house from the adjacent one. It is very hardy, mostly low-maintenance and works great for privacy.

The biggest problem you might face in the beginning is people taking the chutes. We used to have at least one person a week sneaking around with garden scissors trying to take pieces of the plants to start their own.

I assume you mean deep, to stop roots from spreading underground? And how thick would the cement have to be?

Do you think gravel would do the trick? Certainly would be easier...

Buying a bamboo barrier would be better. Bamboo rhizomes have been known to crack cement and go through it. The barrier would be positioned to guide the rhizomes to the surface where you can trem them.
