| Politics: Left, Right, and Center National, state, regional, and local politics. Who's doing what to whom, and what you can do about it. How-to-get-action messages are encouraged. "How the government fucked up my life" stories are encouraged. Sharing new methods for cheating on taxes is encouraged. Sample "letters to congresscritters" are encouraged. Apathy and "I can't do anything" posts are discouraged. Left, right, centrist, or any other form of political-economic systems are all up for discussion. Be prepared to defend yourself, or at least have a good line of bullshit ready. Extensive quoting of economists and philosophers is frowned upon. We want to hear what YOU have to say, not what some constipated, impotent, dead guy dreamt up while suffering from the DT's over a hundred years ago thought. |

being a liberal/ democrat is politically correct?
It has come to my attention that if you say you are a republican you are automatically considered "evil" or "part of the system". However, if you are a democrat you are "enlightened" or "fighting the power". Why is it so cool to be a liberal? Is it like this where you are from?

Re: being a liberal/ democrat is politically correct?
Now, do you want to tell us how you came to this conclusion? Do something. That is a really short post, man.
I say this as nonpartisanly as I can, but I think it's Bush's fault that its considered bad to be a Republican these days. No one really likes the guy as his ratings are complete shit and he has done some seriously fucked up shit to this country.

Re: being a liberal/ democrat is politically correct?
Just depends where you are and who you're listening to. It's probably "cool" to be liberal if you're watching MTV, Comedy Central, or live somewhere like California or Northeast. On the other end, in a lot of the media and politics, "liberal" has a very negative connotation. In most of the middle of the country, being conservative is to be "real American" and a "salt of the earth" type person.
But aside from the pure politics of it all, I think Repubs are often seen as stiff and old, while Dems are seen as diverse and younger (which, while a stereotype, is generally true).

Re: being a liberal/ democrat is politically correct?
Where I live republicans are seen as being stupid and unable to hold there own in a debate about political issues, often resorting to reasons that involve Jesus and/or morality. Also the guy above me said something true about where I live with the Dems being young and diverse. Oh and I live right next to a large (+30,000) university. This is not really my opinion (only partially) and is generally what I observe.

And look at the sad corrupt lot of Alaskan Republicans, the most recent being Ted Stevens.I was a Republican back in the 70s--worked for Dick Thornburgh when he was governor (he later served as attorney general), and being Republican was somethign to be proud of.
And Palin was abusing the power of her office back when she was mayor of Wasilla.

Re: being a liberal/ democrat is politically correct?
What everyone else said above. William Churchill said something along the lines of, "Under 25 and conservative, no heart. Over 35 and liberal, no brains." That's not an exact quote, I know, but it was something like that. Typically, conservatives want things to "stay the same", liberals want "change". Youth typically identify with liberals because of their rebellious and idealistic nature--they want to change what their parents' generation got wrong. Along with the past 8 years of the most unpopular president in US history, many Americans now believe that to be conservative you are a rich, old, white male (which is usually true). this makes you "the man", it's never cool to be "the man" (any hip-hop or pop/rock song will tell you that), and so liberals are seen as the alternative. I don't know what you mean by "politically correct", but liberals tend to be more right-brained than their conservative counterparts, which means they are more open to new ideas and take an interest in art, music, and emotions. left-brained people are usually into organization, logic, and speech. it's considered "cool" to be somewhat artsy, i.e. the "tortured artist." being a liberal is "cool" in the eyes of most of the youth. Personally, I believe that liberals are much more in touch with common, everyday people than conservatives. The way I see it, a typical liberal will make more of an effort to help the poor or underpriveleged, while a typical conservative will make more of an effort to keep the rich afloat on their yachts and the corporations rolling in their billions of dollars.

Not to mention she calls obama a socialist when she runs the most socialist state in the country. IF the rest of the US ran like Alaska I don't think anyone would be against socialism, haha. Granted, it's unsustainable considering alaska received more in federal taxes than it pays. That's the case in a lot of US southern states too. The hard-working "democrat" states usually receive less in federal taxes than they pay up. Obama's state of illinois is one of them.
Ultimately conservatives are fed good morals and ethics, being fiscally responsible and not overextending yourself or expecting hand outs. So, so, out of touch with reality...

Well a lot of "liberals" and "democrats" are conditioned into these beliefs. I used to think Michael Moore was the shit and he was for all this change. Thats the problem. There are all these fake or corrupt or just ignorant "liberals"(i like to call mainstream liberals or democrats). The Democrats and their leadership do a good job of convincing many people they are the agent of change and they are gonna make things better. But they support all the fake ass big government policies the republicans do. Neither is any better. Remember Bush couldnt of done what hes done without the complicit and corrupt Democrats. Who voted for the Iraq War and the Patriot Act? Republicans and Democrats

Yea Mccain and Palin are both as Socialist as Obama. I don't see them trying abolishing the welfare system or getting rid of the income tax, both key components of Socialism. What about Mccains healthcare plan which gives people a $5,000 tax credit, isnt that welfare and socialism(which will then be taxed later lol)? Im not saying I agree or disagree with any of this, im just sayin their frauds and they have no fuckin idea what socialism is. And they've both been hammering on that "redistributing the wealth" wealth thing Obama said. Well in a proper Capitalist system shouldn't that happen anyways? No one wants wealth to stay concentrated in the hands of the few (well the ppl dont want it, the ppl in power do), everyone agrees wealth should be redistributed. It is just about in what manner it gets distributed, what medium is used to redistribute the wealth. Whether it be the market or the government.

To be fair, alot of the southern states rank the lowest in median personal income, but Alaska is ranked as #6 in the nation.

Re: being a liberal/ democrat is politically correct?
I'm presuming you're young and/or live in a liberal area. This would lead to you catching shit from your peers for being conservative.
It's fine.
I'm a 20 year old far right winger and I get shit on a daily basis by my friends and acquaintances. These people I don't bother to shit on back because at the end of the day we all hang out and I don't want any of my friends having low self esteems after I've shown them how uninformed they are.

being a liberal/ democrat is politically correct?
Yes it is also the cool thing to do -- and it'll get you laid more often.
I faked being a democrat for many years to impress the college girls.
In secret I always voted conservative or libertarian.

This is why I won't casually discuss politics unless it's with really close friends or smart people. Never at parties. Never around girls I'm attracted to in the slightest. Unless we're talking about international affairs then you can mask your views with a bunch of culturally-sensitive sounding bullshit when in reality you are just saying many different ways to justify bombing the fuckers.

Re: being a liberal/ democrat is politically correct?
Depends on where you live.
But, in the afterbush era of the neo-cons, a person claiming the right will receive less "are you an utter fucking moron" if they disown Bush, or make it readily apparent the clear distinction that exists between true conservatism, and the Reagan/Bush/Dubya/Rove/Rumsfeld era of the neo-con.
Me personally, I will celebrate the day Bush steps down, the day the man dies, and would like to find out how feasible it is to piss and shit on his grave when he does die, until I have pissed and or shat on it 700 billion times.

Re: being a liberal/ democrat is politically correct?
well lets just see here
9 dictionary results for: liberal
1. favorable to progress or reform, as in political or religious affairs.
9 dictionary results for: conservative
1. disposed to preserve existing conditions, institutions, etc., or to restore traditional ones, and to limit change.
yup that pretty much answers your question
