Default Conflicted.

So my girlfriend might end up getting work in Ohio. I live in Boulder half the time and Connecticut the other half; she lives in Connecticut. If she ends up getting into a dance company in Ohio, I'll see her probably half as much if not less. I already see her quite infrequently.

Here's where I feel conflicted: I know her situation at home really sucks. Her dad's an alcoholic and the place is falling apart, but her dad is in denial and doesn't have the money to fix it. Unless she gets a job, she's gonna be reliant on her parents. I want her to be happy and independent. At the same time, I don't know if I'll be able to bear seeing her even less than I do now. I feel selfish for wanting to keep her from going off, but I almost don't want her to get into a company. It makes me feel petty, but I want to stop it. I know I could persuade her not to go if I wanted to.

What should I do?

Let her come to Ohio, I'll take care of her for you. :)

Just kidding, man that sucks. I suppose you could try to persuade her not to go but if it's a good opportunity for her and she's smart then she'll probably just ignore you and take the job anyway. Tough one man I don't know.

Stop being a selfish prick. You know what the right thing to do is. Now go and support her for being able to move out of her shitty situation.

If you're saying to yourself, "But colorsoc I really don't think I could live without her!" then you need to ask yourself something. If you really love her as much as you think you do and can't live without her, would you change your life for her? Would you up and move to another city for her; would you sacrifice yourself for the relationship?

I would not sacrifice myself for a relationship. I couldn't be in a relationship that required me to give up my sense of self. But would I leave what I've built myself here? Yeah, maybe. But It's not that simple. I don't know if I can start over again. I've done it too many times and it's left me emotionally fragile and socially awkward. That's the only reason I don't want to.

Edit: That, and I'm only 20 and really don't have the financial resources to relocate.

Let her go off and do her own thing. The distance will do you good. It'll give you time to grow and mature in ways you never even thought possible. Hell, you might even get that head of yours out from your ass too.

Where in CT you guys from?

So let me get this straight. You won't make sacrifices to make a relationship work. You won't move for her because you've done it a lot already and don't want to go through all the crap that that comes with starting over. You wish she would sacrifice her future and endure a shitty lifestyle so your relationship can conveniently continue. How do you not feel like a dick?
I can sympathize with the fact that you've been emotionally broken from past endeavors but don't expect others to throw away their lives for you just because you have issues. If you really care about her then support her decision, tell her you love her, give her one last fuck, help pack her shit up, and then hug her & wave her off.

Ugh you're kind of an idiot. I've said I do feel like a dick. I never said I wasn't willing to make sacrifices, but that I wasn't willing to sacrifice my sense of self or individuality as you seemed to be insinuating. I would move, but I'm not sure it's entirely possible.

On the contrary, you sound pretty dependent on this girl.

My bad, the appropriate question should have been: Do you really expect sympathy for your side? You're asking her to sacrifice her individuality and self just so things are more convenient for you.
