Best bolt action rifle for 1000
As the title says, what do you all feel is the best rifle for 1000 bucks? I plan on long range shooting and I want it to be able to take down big game. I'm leaning towards getting .308 if that helps any.
All suggestions and opinions welcome.

Re: Best bolt action rifle for 1000
Do you really have to spend $1,000, or is this just a maximum budget?
It would be very easy to spend half that and convert a Mosin-Nagant for such long range shooting. Mosin-Nagant milsurp rifles often cost less than $100, plus whatever you want to spend on optics and a $60 or $70 bolt conversion kit.

6/10, he didn't mention AK47s or deagles.
Nor did he tell him to get an AWP.

My dad has a Remington 710, which you can get chambered in a number of rounds, most suitable for big game. Then you can spend the rest of your money on some good glass.

A 1000 is just around what I would like to spend on the gun, optics, and bipod. Also, I would like the rifle to be pretty current.

Savage 10 in 308. Add scope and bipod, and you're done.

Nobody's that stupid, right?
Oh and to the OP look into a Savage 10FP-LE2. I'd be willing to go out and say they're the best rifle in their price range period. The LE models are better because they have detachable mags and fancy macmillan stocks

Oh, ok. My mistake. I just had to be sure.
You want to make a mosin fully automatic? It's really easy, provided you're a serious shooter and know your shit. You need to take the bolt out and find the part that sticks out on the side. See that part? That's the sear. Cut that shit off and you'll instantly make it full auto. Be careful though, if the 5-0 sees this they'll throw you in jail for illegal assault weapon construction.
If you drill out the bottom of the clip you can totally insert any AK D.C (doofus clip, thats what I think you meant by donut clip).
If you're gonna saw it off you need a barrel shroud too. Make sure it goes up, so that your shoulder can get protected.

I suggest you place the butt of your Mosin Nagant between your feet, place the end of the barrel in your mouth and kill yourself.

Re: Best bolt action rifle for 1000
Reggie_Love, thanks a lot for your help man. I just got through cutting it down as you instructed, it operates a little less smoothly but that's nothing some sandpaper can't clear up. I was going to sand the metal down anyway because I'm going to paint it golden and polish it. Do you know of any websites that have blueprints for a suppressor? I'm a stealth killer.

M1a1 match rifle. it is more than a 1000$. Plus you would have to spend quite a bit on the optic.
Edit: my bad I overlooked that it said bolt action. i would still get the m1.

LOl at redisigning the nagant to be gas operated. Much easier to just buy a rifle thatwas designed to be gas operated.
The magazine would be the least of your worries.

Re: Best bolt action rifle for 1000
I expect 5 rounds full auto with a Mosin would break your shoulder.
Uzi, you should check my posts for the most silent suppressor on Earth for large calibers (no joke). Completely DIY too.
And you should try this load in your rifle. It's a Special Forces load, posted by one of our more revered regulars here a long time ago.
Please just be sure not to spread it around; it's one of our tightly guarded heirlooms.
7.62mm HIFH.
You will need:
.308 casings (the nice thin civilian stuff, not military. More room for powder that way)
Large rifle primers
Hodgdon Titegroup powder (more accurate than other powders)
.323" diameter 200 gr Sierra HPBT bullets
A pencil.
After prepping and priming the cartridge cases, load with 60 gr of Titegroup. Yes, it will all fit, just pack it in there good and tight with the pencil.
Compressed loads are safer because the powder can't shift around and cause friction, you see.
Then seat the bullet as deeply as you possibly can. It may have some difficulty fitting into the case neck at first, but you keep pulling on that handle until the only thing sticking out of the casing is the ogive.
The further you can get that bullet in there, the better.
When firing, you may experience difficulty chambering it at first. This is because the match bullet needs a really tight fit in order to work properly. Just force the bolt handle until you can get it closed just enough to fire, not necessarily until you can fully lock the action.
This round will penetrate 25mm of A500 steel at 800m, groups into 0.53" at 100m.
Naturally, since your Mosin is 7.62x54R, you will need this brass and not .308. Plus, replace the 60 gr with 80gr of powder, to compensate for the bigger casing.
I hope this load serves you well. And please post results after you have completed your project.
Thanks,
LavaRed

Re: Best bolt action rifle for 1000
.308 or .308 Lapua?
.308 is a great round, and about as large of a bore as anyone should really go unless hunting some serious game. By that I mean the only serious game to hunt with bolt action, water buffalo, and there's only a handful of big game rounds worth using, and the largest is .460 Weatherby Magnum. Big rounds are overhyped to hell though, and most of the ones you constantly hear such as Nitro Express are dog shit.
Onto rifles, briefly. For your money there are better rifles for long distance precision than going Savage.
If you dont hunt often, but throw your gun around when you do, a Savage is a great choice.
If you want to take something large down at considerabley safe distance chambering your rifle in .308 is a wise move. But I can't particularly recommend big bore Savages.
I can't shed more light for you because I don't know enough about your prey, your habits, and preferences.
For a spot on recommendation, you have to provide me with enough information.
A good general purpose rifle a Savage may be, in .22-250 through to a few larger calibers, maxing out at .270 necked down. Spend the rest of the dough on some reputable secondhand optics. Full wooden stocks are preferrable.

You've never shot a .50 have you?

It's like a Ford vs Chevy thing. For the money what else can you get? A Remington? Some people prefer Savage to Remingtons for several reasons, and they're all valid. I'm a Remington guy myself though. Yeah, I drink the kool-aid.

This.

Maybe to the cheap crap that Savage usually throws on their rifles, but I'd say that in most cases, but especially for precision shooting, a quality synthetic is preferrable to wood. They don't warp.

But wood is so sexy :o...
Maybe we could design a composite stock that is synthetic on the inside, with a thin layer of wood on the outside for the look :D.

Re: Best bolt action rifle for 1000
If you want accuracy i'd definatly recommend the Savage M10 or M12, I have a stock standard M10FP in .308win with the "Tupperware" factory stock and am currently getting 15mm - 20mm groupings for 5 shots at 200 yards with 178gr A-MAXs and Lapua brass - Infact every handload i have loaded for it has been sub-moa (keep in mind I only load match bullets).
Also unless you will be shooting on a rifle range you'll need a laser range finder to shoot LR effectivly which will probably run you about $300-350US for a cheap one (Bushnell elite).
Just my $0.02

NASDAQ?
Either full synthetic or laminate hardwood. What you describe I think is like bakelite or something. They had it for AK74 stocks. It's revolting.

Oh, I get it. Not what I had in mind. The reddish AK 74 stock is Bakelite. What I'm talking about would be a synthetic stock covered with thin real wood sheet on the exterior.
