I am very interested in getting one for uni (901 seems to be the price / preformance mark) but im wondering if anyone here has put debian (or one of it's forks) onto it? By all accounts the distro they included seems to be a let down and we all know debian is the best.

Does everything work as it should? i'm a seasoned user and i don't mind fiddling around, but there is a point when it just doesn't become worth it.

I've heard very good things about the EEE-specific version of Ubuntu, which is itself a derivation of Debian. I don't have a netbook to try it out on, as mine is still on backorder and probably won't be here for the better part of the next million fucking years.

But it may be worth a look.

The linux Asus EeePC's default OS is Xandros which is a fork of Debian. As you can imagine, because of this - there is a huge Debian community using the EeePC with plenty of wiki articles. Currently I'm still using Xandros with the Advanced Desktop Option (kde) but as Debian is my distro of choice on many of my computers at home - this Christmas I'm going to be putting DebianEeePC on both mine and my mums EeePC.

But the EeePC's are just computers man, if you don't like Xandros or Debian for that matter then you can just install another OS...

I'll write up a guide when I do my install so you can see if it's for you...

My big concern was wireless networking to be honest. Ive spent many an hour battling ndiswrapper and the like only to end up with flaky results and not-so-smooth operation.

I had assumed the default OS was some red hat based thing for some random reason. I spent half the day today reading about it (my thesis can wait) and it impresses me more and more. The keyboard seems to get a mention a fair bit for being a little too small, i guess i will have to play with it at a store and see if it's a deal breaker.

Also KDE will not do.

I haven't had a problem with wireless at all but wireless support was the only reason I didn't install Debian when I first purchased it. The wiki at the time (7 months ago roughly) had a complicated solution to get wireless in debian to work reliably and I didn't want to attempt it. I haven't checked but I'm hoping there is a reliable solution now.

Xandros gets a bad rap for whatever reason but in the months I've used it I've started to really enjoy it. For me the keyboard is not a problem it is the screen size as I have the 2Gb model - but it wasn't a deal breaker for me and I still take it with me everywhere.

You'll have to check it out and see if it's suitable for you...
