soda can pipe-unsafe?
I've heard that soda can pipes will fuck up your brain because of the aluminum in them.
Is this true?
like this:http://www.safehavensinternational.org/images/sodacanpipe.jpg
the dent with the holes is the bowl, you smoke out of hole where you would drink the soda, and there's a little hole on the bottom on the can for air to come in.

Re: soda can pipe-unsafe?
i've never smoked out of ones of those because when i was a little kid i burned a soda can with a torch lighter and it made that nasties fucking smell ever. also i think they coat the insides with something to protect it from the metal. imo apples are good weather or not you're that desperate.

yeah I've heard about apple pipe/bong/whatevers
I was just wondering cause my friend (not a SWIM type thing, literally one of my friends from school) uses the can thing.

Just do it it's not that bad for you. I used to do it back in the day and I'm fine (relatively). Just keep the flam on the weed and dont sit there and deliberately smoke the aluminum part.

It won't put holes in your brain but I wouldn't make a habit out of it.
Just think about all the paint on the soda can..

Re: soda can pipe-unsafe?
i was thinking about using one on halloween to smoke some salvia with (no access to a proper smoking device right now). it's 5x and really finely shredded, so an apple bong/pipe is a no go cause the leaf bits would fall right through.
oh, and what are the dangers of inhaling little bits of weed and or salvia particles?

Re: soda can pipe-unsafe?
unless your doing it like 5 times a day everyday then I really wouldnt worry. Ive done it like twice ever, there are so many other options that are easy with household items and safer/more effective.

Re: soda can pipe-unsafe?
Perhaps you have never lined your grill with aluminum foil...
Do you ever use the oven?
Ever use aluminum foil to: heat up things?
Ever buy cold things that get heated up from a food place:
Garlic Knots, A single Pizza slice, Bagel, Beef Patty?
Drink things that come in cans?
You know, those get mighty hot in the truck......

Who cares. The weed is more important than the method in which you smoke it.

Re: soda can pipe-unsafe?
The whole theory that smoking out of soda cans is unhealthy came from the presence of elevated levels of aluminum in alzheimers patients.
This theory is complete bullshit because:
-There is no evidence that aluminum causes alzheimers. (It could be that alzheimers causes elevated levels of aluminum in humans. It is also possible that some third variable, like genetics, causes both)
-Even if ingesting aluminum did cause alzheimers, its boiling point is 4,473 degrees fahrenheit. That means that you would have to heat your soda can to that point before any of the aluminum turned into an inhalable vapor. Since your lighter (even a torch lighter) doesnt get anywhere near that hot, there is no concievable way that you could inhale aluminum from smoking out of a can.

Re: soda can pipe-unsafe?
do you really want to smoke the polymeric coating though? it degrades at 368° C while the temperature that a bic lighter flame burns is 1977° C. there aren't any illness associated with aluminum you guys are right, but there are illnesses associated with polymer fumes. you're smoking the hell out of that shit every time you do it.

Metal fume fever is illness caused primarily by exposure to certain metal fumes. Chemicals such as zinc oxide (ZnO) or magnesium oxide (MgO), often cause this through breathing fumes created by heating or welding certain metals, such as galvanized steel. Chromium is also a hazard, from stainless steel. Cadmium, present in some older silver solder alloys can, in extreme cases, cause loss of consciousness within a matter of minutes. Iron itself, and so most simple steels, does not give rise to it. Neither does aluminium.
Fucking idiot, that's from your own source.

fuck you asshole. i found a contradicting source on the almn thing but in retrospect it doesn't make sense because they were talking ingested almn. this source is talking about welded almn, you don't weld cans the flame doesn't touch can that much. think about.

weld = burn things with flame producing tool
if you inhale aluminum fumes, you actually are "ingesting" it.

Re: soda can pipe-unsafe?
also heard bad things about tin foil, but that may be because of the fact that tin foil is made of aluminum, but it's still called "tin foil", and tin fumes are bad for you.
This thread is so stupid. Instead of trolling it, however, I'm going to help you. Let me explain my entire thought process.
I started off with the understanding that any metal (or any THING) in too high of concentration inside of you is bad. So I looked up Aluminum Oxide using google. The following is a cited quote from wikipedia.
"Health and medical applications include it as a material in hip replacements.[3] It is used in water filters (derived water treatment chemicals such as aluminium sulfate, aluminium chlorohydrate and sodium aluminate, are one of the few methods available to filter water-soluble fluorides out of water). It is also used in toothpaste formulations."
I reasoned that burning aluminum will make Aluminum Oxide. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Next, I looked up the toxicity of aluminum in general.
http://www.emedicine.com/MED/topic113.htm
Aluminum will fuck you in high quantities. No surprise.
Aluminum is also used in antiperspirants as AlCl3 or something similar. But we know that the danger is in what the particular element is bonded with (or not) that makes it dangerous. Look at table salt (NaCl) and Cl by itself. Chlorine gas will kill you. Table salt will make your food tasty and provide you with necessary electrolytes. Make sense so far? Let's review:
1) Too much of anything is bad.
2) It's important that we look specifically at aluminum oxide.
3) Aluminum oxide is used to filter water, and in hip replacements.
Therefore, smoking from a can now and again will not cause you any harm.
I'm not going to look up the paint. I just don't care. You're already smoking pot, so what do YOU care?
As for your other question, inhaling pieces of herb will not harm you. See the cilia? It's a friendly little "hair" that sweeps shit from your lungs into your esophagus. You end up eating the little burned herb. You're already smoking it, so we will assume that eating burned herb is no worse.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cilium
In response to your question about tinfoil, its general use in conversation is a misnomer. That means that when they say tinfoil, they don't mean tinfoil at all. Aluminum foil is cheaper and tin foil is a thing of the past. It's called tinfoil because it is just habit. This is not a guarantee, but I can tell you FOR CERTAIN that aluminum foil is not made from tin. If you're scared, look at the box of foil and see if it says "aluminum" on it. I can tell you for CERTAIN that aluminum cans are not made from tin.
I can rest assured that I helped a person today.
Glass pipes can be very, very inexpensive. Invest in one so your smoking habits do not include the inhalation of aluminum oxide and burned soda can paint. And if I was wrong about anything, please let me know so I don't spread misinformation to anyone else.

The only thing that burns at 700degrees that you listed was the grill. Inhaling and eating are completely different therefore your examples are useless.
