The modern rules for being a sexually attractive male (feat. Bruce Springsteen)
So, I was watching the music video to Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark (http://nz.youtube.com/watch?v=Pk8VZgJkpeg) today. I can only assume judging by his boyish good looks and ample hip thrusting and adoring female fans that he was some kind of sex symbol back in the day.
I started listening to the lyrics and it struck me; if anyone sung about this same shit today, they'd be considered emo and pathetic and sad and extremely sexually unattractive. I would like to, if I may, draw your attention to the following examples;
I aint nothing but tired/man Im just tired and bored with myself/Hey there baby, I could use just a little help
I check myself out in the mirror/I wanna change my clothes my hair my face
So here he is, pretty much saying his life sucks, is directionless and he has body issues.
But wait, there's more.
Im dying for some action/I'm sick of sitting round here trying to write this book/I need a love reaction/come on now baby give me just one look
So basically, here we have a guy who seems almost depressed, singing about how he hasn't got any in ages and how he's 'dying for some action'. And shit, even a look will do.
Now maybe I have misread modern society, but isn't acting desperate a huge turn off? Aren't girls universally repulsed by men who act unhappy and unsatisfied who are lonely?
Or have I read this totally wrong? Has the modern internet faring male simply been brainwashed by PUA bullshit that says you're supposed to act disinterested and nonchalant as possible, then women hate men who are eager?
Or maybe bruce springsteen can just get away with it because of his awesome dance moves and good looks...
Personally, I'm at a loss.

Re: The modern rules for being a sexually attractive male (feat. Bruce Springsteen)
He was rich, popular, and (probably) good-looking. He could've sung about right ol' bollocks, and he'd still be popular with the ladies.
Edit: Just had a look at the vid, he's fucking gay. Being rich and popular obviously goes a long way.

That's always the way, isn't it: if you wanna be popular, you gotta be popular. Stupid fucking world.
Concerning your post, rabbitweed, your guess is as good as mine.

I personally think it was his rugged good-looks, and his voice isn't that bad, he could've sung about anything. I think the song "Glory Days" is much better. Just my opinion though....

Re: The modern rules for being a sexually attractive male (feat. Bruce Springsteen)
Wow, rabbitweed, that's a good reasoning.
Altough see, the PUA Internet thing....
It started by Mystery, who created the Mystery Method and Ross Jeffries. They would put step by step things to do to seduce women (A1, A2, A3) and the famous negs, which are useless and it's not " I close using negs" it should be more "I close despite using negs" and stuff.
Now things are going more natural and more driven with a few small rules. Of course, looking desperate is unattractive. But looking uninterested and nonchalant is unacttractive as well. There is a middle between those both, which is more like, living your life the best you can, being positive, being interested in them, BUT letting them aware if they dump it's like dumping a highly worth diamond. But that isn't made by talking, it's by being someone special, and if you're not, becoming special.
Be a man, that is what is attractive.
Oh, and for singers.... I'd like to tell you this.
You are speaking at a conference on business.
You are a DJ and are owning the room.
You are a bringing in sales.
You are playing basketball or some sport and doing well.
You are a rockstar.
Notice the socially most attractive persons have the highest PHYSICAL VISABILITY and popularity?
E.g. You are a rockstar. Up there performing in front of thousands.
Pretty damn attractive.

Going by this logic, college girls should all be in love with their lecturers.
..Or are they?

Re: The modern rules for being a sexually attractive male (feat. Bruce Springsteen)
Im not going to speculate on why your watching these clips, but the 80's was a different time - and your only picking the one song.
The man is considered 'voice of a generation' its not my generation so i cant comment what kind of voice he is- but the chicks in video clips usually act pretty into the guy no matter who what or why they're singing (youtube chuggo).
Also QFT: You are speaking at a conference on business.
You are a DJ and are owning the room.
You are a bringing in sales.
You are playing basketball or some sport and doing well.
You are a rockstar.

Pretty damn attractive.
- Im going to add
You are the life of the party
You are the smartest guy at the table
YOU HAVE CHARISMATIC PERSONALITY
That sums it up.

They sing today??! Infact while we're on the subject , do they even still have music??
I mean proper music, with a melody...none of that two niggers shouting at each other nonsense.
Sorry kids but whatever else 'rap' may be, it sure ain't music.

Kinda dumb to say. How much rap have you heard? Can you even name 3 artists you've heard? I assume the only rap you've heard would be from on tv/the radio, in which case you've probably heard a lot of bad rap. If we judged all rock by what's on tv/radio, we'd assume that there's nothing but whiny emo bitch bands (though there are a lot :(), but there are definitely some really decent bands out there right now.
So what makes it bad? If it's the simple beats/instrumentals, I may remind you that some of the most famous rock songs are literally things with one or two chords, played again and again. Hell, the Ramones basically made a career out of this.
Is it the lyrics? Well, if you think this, then it's proof that you've definitely been hearing shitty rap. A lot of rappers sing about stuff other than drugs, sex, and crime. Tupac sang about cultural change, cause he realized his people were in a shitty place. Kanye sometimes sings about other things. Immortal Technique is a REALLY smart guy, whose songs are about gang violence, but mostly political change.
While rock and the things it came from used to be the poor man's music, now it isn't. Fuck, paul mccartney and mick jagger have been fucking KNIGHTED. Rock is a thing of the rich now. So, music's new "poor scene" is rap.
So, what you said is like trying american cheese once and dismissing all the amazing cheeses that are out there. If you listen to a lot more, and you still don't like it, well that's just personal preference. But you should at least respect it, and if you don't you're further proving yourself a close-minded idiot.

I have three teenage sons with stereos. Does that answer your question about how much rap I've heard? Certainly I know the names of Tupac and Kanye and I've probably had Immortal Technique inflicted on me at some point.
Oh and I'm actually quite partial to american processed "cheese", in the right place ie on top of a burger.
Just because not all rappers are blinged up wanna be "gangsta" niggers from South Central with a genetic inability to speak even american , let alone english, it doesn't follow that what they produce (note not "create") is music.
Not sure what it is, mind.
Noise, perhaps?
Audio migraine?

I totally agree that the vast majority of rap is pretty shitty, but I think you'd find that that's the case in almost every genre, that a good majority of the music is shitty with way fewer good artists.
No, what follows is that you can't and shouldn't judge an entire genre of music by the small (bad) selection of it you've heard. You're saying "Some/most rappers are bad, therefore the entire genre is bad", I'm saying "Good rappers exist, therefore the entire genre isn't shitty". There's really no getting away from the fact that you said something pretty dumb.

Re: The modern rules for being a sexually attractive male (feat. Bruce Springsteen)
I don't mind some of the new music, but I'm not a big fan of the newer rap. I like the old school rap but that was my era, I do however like Nickleback, Kid Rock and Daughtry. Speaking on topic, I always thought the Punk rockers were unattractive but they always had groupies, so I think it's the charisma that a person has that attracts and not just the looks.

It wasn't really a dumb thing to say, because your defense is based on opinion only, just like his original statement. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. If he says all rap sucks, then he obviously think all rap sucks. Whether you think there is good rap or not is irrelevant. There's no objective good or bad when it comes to music.
Anyway, on topic, I think it was the way BS sang, not the words he was singing. If he'd whined it out like Simple Plan or someone, then he probably wouldn't have been so popular. Being rich probably helped too.

To quote a wise man
Its all in rhythm
Its all in rhyme
You'll wonder what I'm on about half the time
Its a rap.
Its a load of verbals
It don't make sense
Its all off the wall of local gents

Re: The modern rules for being a sexually attractive male (feat. Bruce Springsteen)
To quote a wise man
I always can't stop laughing when I happen to be forced to listen to some "gangsta" rap. Especially since everyone in the room normally acts like it's some serious business.
Example:
I'm comin' straight from the cave who let him out
Crazy nigga thought he was gone, but he ain't gone
Even King Kong took his black monkey ass home
When I hit the block, watch them scatter like roaches
So don't be fake, 'cause I know what a hoe is
Handle my business, no playin' 'cause I'm focused
You the definition of what a f**kin' joke is
When they see you comin', they play with your emotions
F**k with my emotions and they find you in the oceans
Yeah I said oceans, yeah I mean plural
I can't believe anyone can listen to that with a straight face.

I totally agree, there is no objective "good" or "bad" music. But to be a bit more on topic, "Born to run" and "born in the usa" are just really annoying to me, but I respect the talent the guy has and the influence he's had on the music scene. Note, I think he sounds like shit, but I respect him. Ketch is saying not just one artist, but an entire genre is worthless.
Yes, it's a completely different style of music. Yes, the grammar is often pretty shitty. Yes, a LARGE majority of the genre sucks. But don't dislike it because it isn't classic rock.

Way to sound like an old fart jackketch. You're obviously looking for music in the wrong places... Yeah, that's right, the radio is one of them wrong places.
Anywho, you will find that chicks dig all famous musicians. And most famous musicians have a few lyrically gay songs. Bruce Springsteen is a rockstar, it doesn't matter what he writes about.

3. VERY HIGH status
4. confident
5. funny
6. He is safe, he has body guards and many houses
