Default Advice on Opium withdrawals

Hi, it's been a real long time since I have been on totse. Most of the people in this forum are excited about getting high and exploring the drug life. However, I'm done with that and I can't begin to explain how hard it is to quit using opiates like vicodin and morphine. I began using when I thought I was justified about a year ago when I was diagnosed with am auto immune disease called Crohns. Over time ignorantly I built an addiction to opium.
From time to time without realizing what was wrong with me I would suffer withdrawals, I thought I was having anxiety and panic so I was put on more medicine than I was already taking for all the wrong reasons. About a month ago it became very clear to me what was going on, call me naive but I thought I needed the medicine. I tried to quit once and I relapsed in two weeks where I quit again for this past week.
I'm asking for any advice and for some people to please pay attention to what you are getting yourself into. Opium creates a false threshold of pain in your brain, everything is amplified if you don't have your pills. The symptoms of withdrawals are horrible, you don't want to be awake but you can't sleep, you puke and have the runs for weeks, you can't concentrate or enjoy anything. I have become overwhelmed with the guilt of what I have done to my girlfriend and family, the pain they suffer from watching me suffer, it's enough to make you feel terrible about yourself.

taper the dose?

not even in the opiate league but ive experienced w/d's from benzo's, i quit cold turkey had no choice as i had no money to buy more.

if you can just fuck them off it'll be harder for a shorter time.

but i guess opiate w/d's are much worse?

btw im drug free too now and havent been here for ages, feels pretty good after getting through the first couple of weeks of sobriety.

If you have the money and time (not to mention discipline) to taper, well then make a schedule and be done with it.

If you can't taper because you lack drugs or money or time or whatever, then just cold turkey and cushion the blow with some benzos. You might need a few friends to help you out with this technique though, just to make sure you go through with it.

Default Re: Advice on Opium withdrawals

while all these suggestions are true and are very helpful, i can only suggest a monitored detox protocal by professionals..

dude i was on heroin for almost a year straight, i was up too injecting pretty much a bundle a day and lemme tell you, even WITH meds to taper me off it was hell-- they were giving me darovet believe it or not-- and hell.. its not going to be easy but after a few weeks of hell and not sleeping, you start feeling better its just more incentive to never go back to that shit!

ive heard from others that methadone is pretty painless, but i must stress a head of warning here while that in itself can be a trap worse than any of that other shit you were on

if youre going through that much difficulty then id deff suggest speaking with a doctor-- ive heard suboxone works miracles, but from what i understand it can be pretty costly-- even WITH insurance.

in closing the only thing i can say, after going through it myself, and not going back to any of that shit in over a year now, is that even after you detox and start feeling good again, give it a good 3-6 months before the clouds start lifting out of your head--

i hope this has been some sort of help to you-- just try your hardest to stick it out

good luck, and best wishes

As much as this seems dumb, eat nuts. They have chemicals inside which have what are known as pleasure chemicals that send signals to your brain saying that its all good. Your brain makes some but nuts speed it up. With addiction on drugs its the same thing, except that with drugs the brain stops making its own pleasure chemicals, thus making you hooked on whatever shit you got.

In short, eat some nuts.

Ps: if you want to read the full technical version look in the economist

ShekThat is very unfortunate. I have a friend who was just recently diagnosed with crohns and he was
not doing well at first but now he starting to feel better. It is a very dibilitating disease and I can uderstand why you would justify your use with having that. If you feel that your cravings are too strong you could look into a maintainence program like methadone or buprenorphine. If you can stay away from it without maintainence that is even better but it is hard for most.

I hope it works out for you bro.

Things that can help:
smoke some weed if your are a weed user
flaxseed oil
fish oil
b complex
multivitamin
light exercise(even a walk)
Eat good meals even if you are not hungry.

If you don't start geting good proteins, carbs, etc it is going to take longer for your body to repair and heal because those are very important. You dont feed your body its bulding blocks and supplies it wont be able to rebuild.

here are some links I hope they help:
www.dpeg.org/treatment/methadone_withdrawal.htm
"1) Pharmaceuticals: Clonidine 0.1, or 0.2 mg, twice to three times per day. Clonidine is an anti-hypertensive medication that is commonly utilized in opiate withdrawal syndromes. You must come off this medicine slowly—rebound hypertension may occur…especially if you already have high blood pressure…this medication is non-addicting; Vistaril 50-100mg…three times daily…this is a sedating antihistamine which helps with anxiety and sleep…down side is that after 10 days or so it loses its therapeutic efficacy; phenergan 25 mg tab…one every 6 hours for nausea and cramps. I may use these medications on my out/in-patient clients depending on the severity of symptoms. Imodium A/D works well for diarrhea.

2) Intra-Venous Nutritional therapy: In patient or out-patient…typically every day for the first 5-6 days, than every other day until the symptomology has subsided. These nutrient bags can contain proteins, vitamins, electrolytes, and other elements necessary for the body-mind to heal. The advantage of IV therapy is that all essential cofactors bypass compromised gut function. Only when the healing occurs will the symptoms of withdrawal disappear totally. Diarrhea is uncommon in those that receive IV nutrient therapy…but for those not so fortunate, Imodium A-D seems to work well in most. If your are a medical professional and wish I.V. treatment protocols contact me at thesourcenmc@msn.com

3) Oral nutrition: Increase the right proteins!!!! Proteins are the building blocks for neurotransmitters and neurotransmitter receptors…as well as the building blocks for your natural opiate receptors

· For 3 weeks you must remove all red meats from your diet. Red meat has chemical components that increase inflammation and pain. Fish, chicken, eggs are good sources of protein. If you are having a hard time taking in solid foods go to a health food store and buy protein powders that can be made into smoothies or drinks. You absolutely must have increased protein intake…proteins are the building blocks for all enzymes, neurotransmitters, and enzyme receptors in the body. No chemical works in the body without receptors. Just like opioids have to have opioid receptors—which are down regulated during methadone use—this is the reason people have long-lasting pain and aggravation coming off methadone…this isn’t much of a problem with heroin use because of it’s short half-life…proteins are essential for the repair work in recovery…I now use a formulation made by Neuroresearch…their Neuroreplete/D-5 protein formulas works well for those coming off of methadone, methamphetamines and benzodiazepines or any drug for that matter…for more information on this product go to www.neuroresearch.com or www.neuroreplete.com and try to find a doctor close to you that will help you get his product…in fact I treat all my methadone withdrawal patients with this formula

· L-Methionine—a sulfur bearing amino acid…necessary for the production of S-Adenosyl-methionine (SAM-e)…SAM-e is a necessary cofactor in the production of the master neurotransmitters—serotonin, dopamine, adrenalin, and nor-adrenalin…this must be added to any amino acid therapy directed at rebuilding neurotransmitter production and function…500 mg—two twice per day

· Increase your intake of raw fruits and vegetables…you get little or nothing from canned foods…fresh fruits and veges are loaded with fiber which help bind and remove toxins from your body…they also normalize gut function

· Stay off candy, and other sugar heavy foods

· Drink lots of good water, green teas are good for the antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties…no cokes or soda waters for three weeks

· When capable you must start exercising…swimming is best because it is low impact exercise…yoga…tai chi…walking daily…detoxing or otherwise…exercise is a normal component of good health

Supplements: Some need less and some more…remember the efficacy of all nutrition and supplement use is ultimately guided by your genetics…and we are all different to some degree…This is the value of seeing a good Naturopathic physician in the state you are in…The fact is that very few Medical Doctors know anything about nutrition…70%-75% of the standard medical schools in this country have absolutely no nutritional classes what-so-ever…in the other 25 %--nutrition is often a 14-20 hour block of education and this is commonly an elective…Naturopathic physicians that are educated in a medical school environment are taught nutrition extensively with the associated biochemistry.

· I use the following with all types of drug and alcohol recovery….

· Multivitamin with a strong mineral component: in gel caps only…an excellent quality multivitamin is absolutely necessary…remember that vitamins and minerals are cofactors/coenzymes for repair, healing, and normal function of the body…most times I have patients double up on multivitamins for the first 3-4 weeks

· Mineral complex: see above

· Fish oils, or flax seed oil.: necessary for repair and proper function of cellular membranes…anti-inflammatory…these need to be mixed omega 3, omega 6, omega 9 oils—4000 to 6000 mg per day in split doses…although some can be purchased as liguids and mixed with your smoothies.

· If you don’t do the drinks…get proteins as free amino acids…double up

· L-Glutamine 500mg caps…at least 2000-3000 mg per day…split the dose so that your doing it at least twice per day…helps heal the gut and the building block for GABA…the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter…helps slow things down…Do not take GABA as a supplement…GABA is make in the brain…when out side the brain the molecule is to large to cross the blood brain barrier…the building block for GABA is L-Glutamine or Glutamic acid…these building blocks readily cross the blood brain barrier.

· Valarian Root 450 mg: Botanical that reduces anxiety and helps one to sleep…Kava, Jamaican Dog Wood, Lemon Balm, Avena are all nervine botanicals which can be used together or by self…I find the doses for each individual varies but typically 1000 to 1500 mg every 4 hours.

· Melatonin…dosages vary…this is a hormone released from the pinal gland in the human body at night time for sleep…this is essential for those coming off opioids…in my experience as little as 1 mg to 30 mg has been effective…do what you have to do…I’ve had addicts coming off $100.00 a day habits sleep 4 hours the first night…start low and add 3-5 mg every half-hour till sleep…research on healthy volunteers using up to 100 mg of melatonin in a single dose shows little side effects…Melatonin is also known as a very strong antioxidant with 1000 times the potency as Vit E…Take only at night when you would be going to bed at the regular time…the room must be dark…that’s the way this hormone is released in the natural state…

· Full Spectrum antioxidants: relieves inflammation and helps normalize inflammatory pathways and reduces damaging molecules (free radicals) present in the system while detoxing

· Vitamin C: 2000-3000 mg per day divided doses…

· Reduced L-Glutathione 300mg per day: Helps liver detox metabolites of methadone…Detoxing agents can be found in many products…most in combinations…

· Adrenal Support: Research has shown that methadone, and drug use in general, has profound effects on the adrenal glands. In fact, research shows that there is a profound negative effect by methadone on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. This is why those that withdraw from methadone have protracted fatigue and problems with anxiety and insomnia. I often use freeze dried adrenal extracts in treatment with fairly good results. You’ll find these products listed under names such as Adrenal Plus, or Adrenplus…the starting dose is around 1000 mg per day in split doses.

· Milk Thistle with alpha-Lipoic Acid is one combination that I use extensively---for liver repair and detoxification…1200 to 1500 mg of milk thistle and 400 mg of lipoic acid per day in split doses

This is the basics. There is absolutely no way to eliminate all the problems associated with withdrawal from methadone...one must have a supportive environment and often with daily visits from a compassionate health care provider…This will not kill you…it will be a miserable event…what kills most is the movement back to street drugs to ward off the side effects of withdrawal. If fact, cold turkey deaths coming off opioids and methadone are rare and usually associated with other health problems, or overdosing on prescription medications…withdrawal from methadone is much less of a risk than total withdrawal from alcohol. I wish you all luck on this endeavor…My compassion and empathy goes out to you…Ultimately, I know that you can do this…after all…it has to be done."

No it is really good for stopping withrawals because it is a mu agonist which mean withdrawals will come back when it wears off or you run out.

It was already mentioned but eating healthy food, veggies, protein-rich foods makes big difference in how long and how bad you WDs are.

If you are willing to spend money on supplements that will make you feel better while being good for your brain/body and helping you with WDs then I suggest going to the body building or health food stores to get:

DL-phenylalanine or Tyrosine
5HTP or Tryptophan or A LOT of sunflowere seeds
Multivitamin
Amino acids complex(liquid/pills) or powder protein
Milk Thistle (especially if you've eaten bunch of perc or vicodins in your life without CWE)
SAMe

Also research nootropics and search for a thread called phenylalanine or dl-phenylalanine on this site.

Thank you. and I would like to add that you need to stay away from red meats for 2 weeks because the type of protein it cotains has inflammatory properties which cause the aches to be more painful.

Trust me. It will not make you feel better. Withdrawal takes time for the person to start to feel better. sure once you actually start producing a significant amount of endorphins again(this is where the time part comes in) it may help. The body needs a good diet and nutrients to even start to build its own endorphins again as this is the whole reason why one experiences w/d. because the body stops relying on its endorphins and starts relying on the the chemical equivalents to endorphins. But during acute w/d just about the only thing that actually makes you feel better is more opiates/oid or time, good diet, and proper exercise.

It can supposedly be an inhibitor of the enzyme "carboxypeptidase A" which is the enzyme that breaks down natural endorphins.

Yes addiction, not withdrawal.

well op good luck with that. An endorphin inhibitor is going to do nothing if you dont have the endorphins to be inhibited.

during the day smoking kind bud, taking medicinal doses of valium or kpins or xanax. the key is to not indulge in your substances you use to alleviate w/ds or you'll end up back where you started.

at night just down a bunch of shots of your preferred alcohol. that was my main issue with withdrawls is getting to sleep so by any means necessary do what you gotta do to get some sleep.

as far as time ticking by EXTREMELY slow, the cold sweats and all that other good shit all you can do is pass the time. get out of your house, find something to do, go for a car ride go to the store walk your dog. do anything, you will be surprised at how the sweating minimalizes itself when your mind is off it, same can be said for time ticking by so slowly as well. keep busy keep busy and keep busy.

i noticed when i was using alc and benzos to quit i started depending on alc everyday. I would get drunk all day or anything. But I started feeling like i needed those 3-6 beer/shots every night around 6pm and then it kept getting earlier and earlier. I would also get benzos a few times a week and there is the cross tolerance so it was making things worse. I just gave up relapsed, and then got on suboxone. I am not saying I am clean now but i am much cleaner than I was before without subs. I am not drinking, smoking weed(only occasinaly), no benzos, but i did take mushies recently.

I would also get benzos a few times a week and there is the cross tolerance so it was making things worse. I just gave up relapsed, and then got on suboxone. I am not saying I am clean now but i am much cleaner than I was before without subs. I am not drinking, smoking weed(only occasinaly), no benzos, but i did take mushies recently.

honestly i think sub/methadone is the worst route to sobriety because you end up on that shit for years and years. as far as become dependent on alcohol like you said yes, but it is a hell of a lot easier to be strong and just quit alcohol then it is to quit dope. i can quit drinking in a day but its going to take me upwards of a week to quit dope.

Dude, there is still opium in dried poppys. You are still basically using opium if you make tea. Believe it or not there are people who get addicted to poppy tea.

It may very well be possible to convert dried poppy straw and pods back to smokable opium if you know what your doing. But i bet he is using tea.

Or since i read his post again it sounds like he may be recieving medication in the form of laudnum for his chrohns disease, but it is not clear.

Read up on Ibogaine

Its a fucking miracle that actually WORKS

Its a hallucinogenic tryptamine, with the curious sideeffect of COMPLETELY reversing opiate addiction with withdrawalsymptoms.
You see some fucked up hallucinations for 12hours, then bam, youre no longer addicted to opiates or benzos or cocaine or gambling or whatever.

Ibogaine completely resets the brain to a clean state.

No, seriously, google it.

I thought I was just reading a thread the other day on how you couldn't extract the alkaloid content out of your poppy pods and expect to revert it to anything near its original smokable state through any practical means, or was that poppy seed tea? and I'm fully aware people get addicted to poppy tea, people also get addicted to codeine all the time does that make any less fucking weak?

it does not HAVE to be smokable to be opium. crude opium straight from the pod is not very smakable either.

There is a passage in Otto Snows book "Oxy" that explains the extraction of pure morphine from poppy straw, which is dried pods and stems.

It's totally possible. With the right knowledge and a few bucks, one could make heroin from everyones favorite auction site.

Wouldnt the stuff in dried pods still be considered opium?
