alcohol; global societies' limiter?
when i was in hs i used to drink a lot. like 5ths of vodka mostly to myself, scared relationships, uber embarrassment, and of course the toll on my body. basically i was the only one of my peers that would do this. i used to drink hard liquor to the point of od on a pretty regular basis. i wasn't an alcoholic but alcohol was slowing me down. now i'm passed that and alcohol really doesn't appeal to me. maybe i just got 'it' out of my system. i still enjoy beer in moderation when appropriate because beer is arguably the best drink made by man...anyway... now it seems like everyone around me is an avid binge drinker
i moved out of my parents house into an apt with some other student from my school i met on craigslist. they seemed like alright people at first, but it didn't take long for me to realize that i wouldn't want to have anything to do with them on a social level. so it's turned into more of an anthropological experiment, this living situation that is, since these people are so different from me. they're the 'standard' american college students.... not very intelligent and make it a point to get super wasted every weekend. all of their friends do the same thing. i had no idea alcohol was THIS popular, considering its' effects on the human mind and body. people literally cannot control themselves to the point of od. over vacation people drink every fucking day.
it can be neurotoxic. unforgivably addicting. that addiction can turn deadly. people become aggressive. the feeling is cheap. i can go on, but the point of this is; why the fuck is alcohol legal? if i drank as much as i smoked pot i would on the street with 1/3 the mental capacity. why is something to harmful on the shelves? something that can destroy minds and lives is sitting on the shelf in my local grocery store waiting to be picked up in mass quantity, no limit! is it just me or does it seem more than a little crazy? i mean, someone has brainwashed people to the point where they won't acknowledge alcohol as a drug and thats how they justify it's use. it kind of scares me

The better question is, why isn't pot legal? The answer is simple: FUD

Because it's ingrained in society, has been since the dawn of man. You could talk about it until the cows come home.
You just have to find a different group of friends. That's all. Be glad you've 'been there and done that'.

Fuck off. If you don't like it, don't drink it. I suggest you chill the fuck out and possibly have a cold one instead of worrying about how shitty your fellow man is. Besides the fact that it can ruin lives is merely a symptom of it's awesomeness.

I do believe it is for this reason that alcohol commercials have the "please drink responsibly" disclaimer on it.

Thats a bullshit argument. "Drug use" in general is ingrained in society, and has been long before man became intelligent enough to start fermenting things on purpose.
There is no reason to consider alcohol as being 'more ingrained' in society then any other social drugs such as, say, mushrooms or weed. Both mushrooms and weed have had extreme influences on various religions and have, IMO, had a much larger impact on society then common recreational drinking. Weed used to be a necessary component of the American economy - now it's forbidden.
I disagree with the OP asking why booze isn't illegal, but I do agree with his opinion of the drug. I really think that modern societies loyalty to binge drinking but extreme taboo against the use of other, safer, more fun drugs to be a reflection of how truly ignorant humans are.
You can nearly die drinking at a college party and nobody of authority will say much of anything except that maybe you shouldn't drink so much. But get caught involved with the use and sale of weed? Might as well kiss your future goodbye.

Re: alcohol; global societies' limiter?
Well this country makes money on alcohol and weed does not. In fact people in the goverment see weed as a loss of money because they fund a never ending drug war. Just quit your bitchin and kick your roomates ass if they get beligerent. You have the advantage of being an alcoholic so you can rape thier girlfriend when they pass out drunk or something.

Well keep in mind booze is legal because it makes you more productive while Cannabis doesn't. If you don't believe me read about the history of whales, they've been the lazy stoners of the sea for the last 3000 years only managing to star in two hollywood blockbusters

Re: alcohol; global societies' limiter?
Okay, well alcohol isn't illegal because, if you've studied history at all, people complained en masse when it was made illegal (see prohibition). As for why weed is illegal, well that really makes no logical sense if you compare the dangers to alcohol. However, it does not make any money for the government, as alcohol and tobacco do make money for the government. People need to be more educated about the realities of marijuana rather than the propaganda shit the government feeds us. People need to be more worried about the "hard drugs."
So yeah, just blame society and its overall ignorance. If there was some way to get people to protest en masse about legalizing weed, then we'd be set. The problem is, if you look at your general stoner, isn't he wayyyyy too lazy to organize any type of movement? Even so, how many people would openly join him? So of course, we have a dilemma.
Anyway, I'm going to bed. Hopefully I brought some thoughtful discussion back into this thread.
Peace.

yeah it's all lack of education. people will justify their alcoholism or binge drinking with the fact that it's legal and the government doesn't call it a drug. yet it claims more lives than illegal drugs that could be used to better society.

Come on. If you think thats a major factor in these situations, then alcohol certainly would never have become legal. If you look at your general alcoholic, isn't he waaaaay too drunk all the time to organize any type of movement?
It is not a major factor, because not everyone who likes to drink will drink in excess, and daily. And the same thing goes for people who like to smoke weed.
And even for the people who do think weed is "making" them lazy, are they really incapable of performing whatever duties they are putting off? Is weed really that debilitating? Fuck no, they choose to be that lazy. And they choose to do nothing for weed.
People just need to decide that things should change.

Re: alcohol; global societies' limiter?
i think weed is just a lazy man's drug. it isn't weed that makes them lazy, but they like weed because they're lazy. how many lazy fucks are there that can afford to be huge ass stoners? maybe if you're rich... as for me, i smoke all the damn time yet i'm a successful engineering student.

so you had a few problems with the booze, it sounds like these kids are doing things that kids normally do. It's on the weekend, its not like they're drinking every day.
