Guide: Installing Debian on Playstation 3

[Axiom]

Requirements

• A computer with access to the internet
• USB memory stick
• CD burner & blank CD
• USB Keybord
• Ethernet Cable for your PS3 (for use during install)

Download Debian Live / Debain-Installer ISO

• Choose the latest image from the archive http://ps3.keshi.org/debian-live/
• Burn image to blank CD

Download files needed to install kboot

• Plug your USB into your computer and create the folder USB:\PS3\OTHEROS
• Download otheros.bld and otheros.self to USB:\PS3\OTHEROS

Partition PS3 Hard Drive

• In the PS3 main menu go to Settings -> System Settings -> Format Drive -> Format Utility -> Format HDD (warning: This will delete all saved data)
• Choose to either allocate 10Gb for Other OS Partition or 10Gb for the Playstation Partition
• It will restart the PS3

Install kboot

• Plug your USB stick into the PS3
• Go to Settings -> System Settings -> Install Other OS
• PS3 will search the USB stick for otheros - click ok to install

Boot Debian Live

• Plug your USB Keyboard into your PS3
• Put your Debian Live CD into the PS3
• Go to Settings -> System Settings -> Default System
• Select other OS
• PS3 asks if you want to boot now - hit yes
• PS3 will restart and eventually you will see the kboot prompt which looks like this kboot:
• Do nothing and Debian Live will eventually boot into gnome

Run Debian Installer

• Plug your Ethernet Cable into the back of the PS3 (Do I need to say plug the other end into your router?)
• Make sure you still have you Debian Live CD in the PS3
• Restart PS3 to return to the kboot prompt
• At the kboot: prompt type install and hit enter to run the Debian-Installer
• Alternatively you can run one of many commands listed here http://www.keshi.org/moin/PS3/Debian/Live#line-11

a variant of the powerpc arch I believe.

3.2 ghz according to wikipedia.


And still what if someone wanted to use their ps3 as a webserver? what is useless about have an extra pc handy.
