Default Asking her father's permission/blessing.

Last night I was at a restaurant with a female friend. The two women at the table next to us were talking loudly about their friend who'd just become engaged. They were thrilled about the manner of the proposal "He even drove to Toowoomba to ask her father's permission."

My friend quietly told me that she would be pissed off if the guy asked her dad's permission before hers, though she couldn't properly explain why.

So ladies, would you be happy or pissed if the guy asked your dad's permission/blessing?

Guys, would you ask her dad?

I'd have no objection to asking, but I don't really see the point in this day and age.

I guess it depends on the kind of person you are and how close you are with her family, if i knew them and had spoken with them several times i would probably ask permission or at least notify them of my intentions.

What's with all this permission asking bullshit? If a woman is a fucking adult then it's her decision, not her daddy's. This kind of crap pisses me off. I dunno, am I in the wrong? I don't think a woman's daddy should have anything to do with such a personal decision.

I wouldnt so much as to ask as i were to tell. I think letting the father be aware that you plan on doing it would be better. Because it shouldnt matter on his approval or not since he's not in the relationship.. you are.

It's not asking permission, because im sure if you really love the girl and intend on marrying her, someone's opinion won't stop you. It's more out of respect than anything else..

I would be pissed as hell if he felt the need to ask my father's "permission"
What am I, cattle?
In the days when that was the norm women were just like property to men.
That would just be a backwards ass thing to do in this day and age.

I swear I'm not a raging feminist, even though I sound like one right now.

Obviously you should. Women aren't smart enough to make their own decisions. Just look at the shithole the world has turned into since they were allowed to vote.

I wouldn't. Purely because my girl's parents don't like me even though they've never met me. And I'm not going all the way to Poland to get an instant "Nie, kurwa!"

My girl can make her own decisions and if I wanted to actually marry her (which I wouldn't. It's a stupid, outdated concept in this day and age as far as I'm concerned. And she agrees!) I would ask her and take it from there.

where im from(southern US) its really a traditional thing nowadays. i think it really depends on the family, you know if there old fashioned or more new aged. because in my opinion if your going to marry a chick, you would want her family to halfway like you.

I always thought it was a dead practice, but maybe it's just more of a southern/western thing, my girlfriend was born in the south and now lives in the northwest, and she has told me she wants me to ask her father first.

Though I would appreciate the intentions and I wouldn't be angered if my boyfriend did such a thing, I can't see that it would be a good idea. I can't imagine how awkward it would be to ask permission, receive a negative reaction, and then what? You ask her anyways, knowing that it's against the parents wishes. Or don't ask her and be miserable. Unless you're extremely close to the family and know the definite outcome of the answer I would think it'd be safer to just not ask the parents.

I'd do this. Probably only if I knew he'd say yes, but still. The intention is sweet. I guess only because the girl I want to marry would think highly of it.

It just seems proper to me, and yes, I'm from the south.

Also, if I were I father I'd like for him to ask me, just to know that he had the balls to do it would make me say yes.

I imagine I might. Not because I would feel like I should, but because it would be a nice gesture. And if he says no, then you say that you are going to anyway.

Naw. You explain to him how much you love her and respect her etc etc..

So that way you and her could have a good Romeo/Juliet story.

meh :p

Apparently, when anyone makes mention of me in front of my girlfriend's dad, he gets blood shot eyes and starts having facial ticks. Like rage twitches. That's why I'm never meeting him.
