If you read the article, you kind of get the idea that throughout his childhood he was abused and emasculated to the point where it was highly gratifying for him to be able to exercise control over others; to hurt and control them before they could hurt and control him. It doesn't justify it or make it okay, but it does kind of give the idea that monsters are made that way. Maybe he was born with a genetic predisposition to get off on sadism (who can say for sure?) but if anything is obvious it's that any underlying need to dominate and control can be exacerbated by a debilitating loss of control and self-worth in early life. That's my opinion, anyways.
