i try to keep it 1:1 for courtesy.

Public sites, I honestly don't give a shit. I'll usualy leave it running for a day before it gets deleted from my utorrent list.

Private sites...always seeding. More I seed, less I have to worry about how much I can download.

I usually seed, double of what I downloaded. Just because seeding is what made it possible for me to get it.

I usually try to go at least 1:1, but if it's popular, I've had single files go over 50:1.

For public trackers i limit the upload on all my downloads to 10kbs. When the torrent is finished i remove it regardless of what my ratio is. For private trackers i like to keep it to a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio after that i stop.

Usually if my ratio is getting a little low on E.X. Demanoid i'll make a torrent from one of my DVD's or CD's and add it, i'd rather contribute new media then recycling old stuff.

is it true that the authorities are more likely to nail you for seeding...than downloading?

I mostly download from demonoid...i just checked my ratio is currently
0.48 (thats poor i suppose) will demonoid ever "cut you off" or slow you down
