Sounds like your primary problem is a rough case of the flu rather than a severe cough. Generally they only prescribe the codeine syrup for really severe coughing or bronchitis, because opiates are a potent cough suppressant. You definitely could get some, if you play off the cough as the worst part of the whole thing, but you're much more likely to walk out with some anti-biotics and instructions to take some Robitussin/Sudafed with a hot cup of tea and a bowl of soup.

I had it once, but I was cough up blood and had two broken ribs. Not gonna get it for a stuffy nose unless you play hard.

I take it for coughs and every once in awhile I just take a good chug to feel good.

Yeah, the codeien/prometahazine and hydrocodone syrup is popular down here. Doctors don't give a shit. Play off the cough, and make sure you look terrible before you go in.
