So, I'd start by annexing Puerto Rico. It is mercifully free of Puerto Ricans these days, since they all live in Miami, New York and LA. It is currently populated by Ricky Ricardo Jr, Jose Cuervo and two chickens named Pepe and Lupe.

Seriously, though, the only realistic way to launch a coup would be to build up that force completely underground, then launch a massive, multi-pronged takeover, in which all media, mercantile and transportation was swooped up by your regime.

Once control over that area was established, it would have to be maintained, and that could only be done by letting the gubmint know that the lives of the innocent citizens of Wyoming (or wherever) would come to harm if an attempt was made to re-take the territory.

the idea is stupid though. there is another civil war coming, but the government wont be overthrown by conservative couch commandos (and this is the kind of stuff they talk about). but things like the southwest. if the U.S. said every illegal immigrant had to leave, that would be declaring war against the southwest.
