Default recommend a comp

(This probably isn't the best forum for this--please, mod, move this to where it belongs.)

I am thinking about getting a wi-fi laptop. I need something cheap--I won't do any gaming, or audio or video up- or downloading--just email, totse, and writing my memoirs.

Any suggestions?

Hi AM - It will probably get a better response in here.

If you've got all right eyesight you can't beat the ASUS EEE PC for a low cost wireless laptop. I've been using one for about 6 months now and it has quickly become my favourite piece of equipment...

The screen can seem a bit small (I've got the early 2Gb model) but I plug in a monitor when I'm using it for extended periods of time...

The wiki article has better info:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASUS_Eee_PC

This is also a wiki but has a price list:
http://wiki.eeeuser.com/eee_pc_701

It seems a bit outdated as the 2Gb is priced at $299 which is more than it costs in Australia so I doubt that's correct...

Ebay - EEE PC:

Eee PC 900 series with Linux installed is probably the best computer for your needs.

The Linux distro on them is apparently very user unfriendly. The consensus seems to be to install tiny xp on it instead.

No way - Xandros + Advanced Desktop is fantastic...

If you're going to run xp on these things then you are wasting your money...

I'm just going by what the reviews are saying on newegg. I hear installing Ubuntu eee is better if you want Linux. I don't see anything wrong in using Tiny XP though.
