The Wine Thread
Well in recent days I have found myself acquiring a taste for wine. Beer is still my favorite beverage, but i now see the subtleties in the flavor of wine that i guess makes it attractive to a large demographic. Can anyone recogmmend me some wines?
Personally from what i have had I do like Pinot Grigio, Carbernet Savinoung(Sp?), and Melbec
If anyone can recommend some Vineyards, or other good types of wine it would be greatly appreciated.
Right now i am having a glass of summertide pinot grigio from the Cascade Mountain Vineyards in Amenia NY, A small vineyard about an hour away from my house. I must say it is has a nice light fruity flavor.

Re: The Wine Thread
I like a cabernet sauvignon (red or rose) and white zinfandel, but I don't know too much about vintages or w/e, plonk is good enough for me.

Re: The Wine Thread
First of all, is Sauvignon, and Malbec. Malbec isn't really a grape thats used very often to make a wine that you drink by itself. Usually malbec is used in a blend, like in a red Bordeaux or a California red meritage.
Pinot grigio (didn't include a pinot gris because I don't really know of any I like that are as reasonably priced as the others I'm listing), here are some good ones:
MacMurray Ranch's Russian River Valley
Etude Carneros
Chehalem WIlliamette Valley
Okay okay, one pinot gris... Lis Neris! Its affordable, something like $30.

Re: The Wine Thread
As hard as I try, I still really dislike white wine. Just can't appreciate it.

Re: The Wine Thread
sambob, have you had the opportunity to try Burnet Ridge? It's made here in Cincinnati with grapes trucked in from California, very good stuff - its distributed sporadically around the tri-state, was wondering if you got it up that ways.
I recently got to meet and do a wine tasting with the vintner, Chip Emmerich. Very affable fellow.

I've met Chip Emmrich and Steve Dietrich (I think thats his name), and tried their wines. They're all very decent. The Sauvignon Blanc is pretty good, worth keeping a couple of bottles around. But the real winner, the one I always keep in my little store, is the Purple Trillium. Its a blend, like Bordeaux and California meritages. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and either Petit Verdot or Malbec, one or the other. Don't remember off hand.

Fuckin' A.
"Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot," according to the B.R. website. I'm a huge fan of the Burnet Ridge label having been introduced a couple of years ago by an article in the local Enquirer.
I generally keep at least three bottles of everything produced, though I'm planning on purchasing a case of several of the red wines produced by the winery and letting them age for at least a few years.
Oh yeah, and Dietrich is the other guy's name.

Re: The Wine Thread
I've been cooking and drinking Shiraz quite a bit lately. Braising chicken leg quarters with a cup or so of wine and a cup of broth after browning is really tasty. Last weekend when I did it, I tossed in some onions and copious amounts of garlic.
I can get through about one glass of red before I grow weary of it, though I'll sit and drink an entire bottle of Riesling if it's around.
