How to hook up PC fan/light controller up in car?
Hey guys, got abit of a problem...
http://img235.imageshack.us/img235/5820/diagramhd8.jpg
I have a fan/light controller that I want to hook up in my car to control some 12v LEDS and cathodes, already have them hooked up to a standard switch, but i'd like to use this instead.
The molex powers it, which (as diagram says) needs 12v, 5v and the 2 grounds. Car battery only uses 12v, how do I I convert 12v into 5v so I can hook it up?
Also the fan and light inputs, I hooked up the controller to my computer molex, and if I touch the pos/neg LED to any of the prongs, it wont turn on. How do I connect 12v source to these fan/light inputs?
Thanks
heres the specs of it off a website if this helps...

Not a good idea. You're not always going to get 12v from your battery. When your car is on, so is your alternator, you'll be putting somewhere around 14.4v into that fan controller. It may or may not be able to tolerate that much power.

If you want the easy option, look for a cigarette lighter USB charger, use 12v from the battery, and rewire the usb charger to take the 5v from that.

Re: How to hook up PC fan/light controller up in car?
I would just get a 1000W DC converter and hook it up to your car battery. I'm sure it would be easier converting the power from a DC outlet then straight from a car. You would also be guaranteed 1000W.
Something like this:

Re: How to hook up PC fan/light controller up in car?
I think...some of you guys are missing the main issue.
12v power to power it isnt an issue, I dont need a ciggarette lighter adaptor - I can power the molex from my battery directly since its 12v - I did it earlier.
Its more of getting the plugins that typically use a 3 pin fan connection, to power 12v LEDS. If I plug the 12v cathodes into them, they work fine - but if I plug LEDS into them, I get nothing. Even though BOTH run off a 12v current. I don't quite get it.

Molex is NOT just 12v, it is 12v AND 5v.
And have you got the polarity on the LEDs right?

I was going to say this. I got a bunch of these. Great for making battery packs for USB devices.
