Default Apathy

In high school I had a lot of friends, a couple of girlfriends, went to and played shows at least once a week, went to parties all the time, basically had it pretty good. It was probably the most fun time period in my life.

I'm turning 21 this year. I have exactly zero friends, I haven't hung out with anyone in a social context in multiple years. My day goes something like:

1. Wake up

2. Go for a run

3. Return home and waste my day working on hobbies/reading/building stuff/etc

4. Go to sleep

5. Repeat

Seven days a week. I don't have a job or go to college (I got decent grades and good SAT scores, I was accepted to multiple schools, I just never went, though I guess I eventually need to at some point in my life). I live, rent free, in my dad's house. We rarely speak to or see each other. He doesn't bother me, I don't bother him. I don't have a car or a phone or anymore.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not exactly complaining. I have it pretty good, it's just that every once in a while I get these pangs of loneliness, like it would be nice to have people to chill with again, but when I think about the ridiculous amount of work that would be involved in basically restarting my life, I always come to the same conclusion: "fuck that".

How do I get over this apathy? I consider myself a pretty intelligent guy but I can't, for the life of me, figure this out. I have no motivation to do anything beyond what I'm already doing, but I know that to be truly happy, I need to.

I'm not depressed. I'm actually fairly content most of the time, which I think may be part of the problem.

Set some goals for yourself man. Something that will make you happy when you accomplish it. For example:
-Get a job.
-Save up $xxxx.
-Find a place of your own to live.

You've gotta be self motivated. Think about it, if you get into the habit of taking the easy road, it'll just get tougher to do something with your life. Do you really wanna end up a 30 year old guy living at home with his dad? You're still young, there's still lots of shit you can do with your life, but you're reaching that point where anyone that knows or meets you is gonna think you're just some lazy kid living off daddy.

Ask yourself what you want out of life, and go for it. Unless you seriously lack ambition, there must be more you want to accomplish than messing around all day, right? A social life will come with time, obviously your current situation isn't the best for making friends. Work before play, first find some sorta job then worry about improving your life in other ways (buying a car, phone, finding friends, etc.).

I would say step one is finding a job, you'll meet people that work at the same shitty place you do and eventually you'll start getting invited over to their place to drink or whatever.
From there I would say maybe start going to community college if there is one near...

Join the military, they'll get you motivated; you're already fit so it shouldn't be a problem and you'll pretty much be forced to make friends. Unless you're like Lee Harvey Oswald, the guy that shot JFK, that mother fucker was one emo commie.

Go to college.

You are bothering your father.

He doesn't want to see his son loafing around all the time on his dime.

He doesn't have the nerve to tell you this.

I wont tell you that, while attending college, your life will be any different.

I think you will find that you're life will only marginally improve.

You will still feel as though most of your time is being "wasted" into hobbies/etc, but
I would imagine that your sense of purpose will increase, if you enter an area of study that suits your interests.

Whatever your "hobbies" are now, study them.

Uh, yeah, sort of. Alright, without trying to sound like some emo faggot: just before high school graduation this kid I grew up with, one of my absolute best friends, killed himself. Completely out of the blue. Long story short, I didn't take it very well and I kind of grew out of touch with everyone else. After a few months most people had stopped bothering trying to talk to me as well. They went off to college, got on with their lives, etc. I don't blame them or anything, that's life I guess.

Dude, go do something. There's no magic thing we can say that will make the apathy disappear, or make it really easy to go out and restart your life. You just have to get over that part of you that just wants to sit around and do nothing. Think about how hard it's gonna be in ten years to restart your life if you don't do it now.

Op maybe you should see a counselor as your problems seem to be stemming from the death of a close friend. You live in Mass, go to the cape, Boston, go skiing... there are endless things you can do.

You say you spend time with your hobbies, find a group or club that does the same thing and meet with them every week. You will develop friends with the same interests.

I wouldn't recommend going to the loop to hang out unless your a) in high school and b)have friends to go with you. It would be weird if you just joined a group their. And most people who you will meet just hanging out will be boring, as the fun people will see the movie and go do something else.

Man, I can't believe I have to keep dishing out the same advice.

If you're not going ANYWHERE in life currently, and want to fastrack yourself somewhere, join the fucking army. Or if you're cool enough, the french foreign legion.

You get 4 years to think shit over, learn basic discipline (if you aren't in school or at work, you're seriously lacking in discipline) and make friends and money.

Afterwards, when you have money and a GI bill, you can decide where you want to work or go to school and how to go about it.

Or you can keep sitting on the couch doing NOTHING with your life.

If you haven't already smartened up and picked a direction, you probably can't find it on your own.

yea i went through this for about 2 days after i graduated high school...

then i moved to a new state, got my own apartment, got a decent job, and i feel great.

nothing beats independence. with this comes actually liking who youve become, with this comes confidence, with this comes the ability to go out and want to improve yourself/life.

keeping yourself in a state of vegetation, all youre doing is thinking. you need to be doing.

go do.

I've been where you are.. and if you don't do shit,. hell, unless your dad kicks you out this is how your gonna end your life cause it's a never ending circle

Just do ANYTHING, go socialize, find a job, or go back to school , once you get into doing stuff again, you'll do more stuff and before you know it, you'll have your life back

And really, your friend already wasted his life, don't waste yours too just cause you never got outta the dip. It's too precious for that, you might not see that now, but you will, one day, and regret every day you wasted..
