Opiate addiction: treatment study
This isn't quite the same article that I had before, but they found that treating heroin addicts with Dilaudid worked better than using Methadone. 26/27 addicts couldn't tell that they weren't on the H. Thus, they could be treated with the D & not have to go through the prescription H or Methadone hassle.
In theory at least.

You realise it would just become a prescription Dilaudid hassle?

Yeah. I'm no Opiate user, but generally I've heard that after about 4 years users don't get high anymore, they just feel normal. Of course, people who stop & then start again seem to get high to their liking?
I can only relate as a Weed smoker. I'm only comparing it in this pseudo-similar way. Stopping drug use allows the brain's receptors to re-jig themselves (?). Different receptors of course. Having chronic pain: I'd prob be way into the Opes if I had a cheap source. Docs basically tell me to "Fuck Off!" when I consult them. So I have some interest in the whole deal.

Re: Opiate addiction: treatment study
The only problem is, dilaudid is considered by some to be more pleasurable than H when injected, and I'm going to make a hasty generalization saying MOST heroin addicts are IVers. :P
Therefore, they're not on heroin anymore, but they still have a very tasty substitute in their cabinet.
And I don't care who you are. If you are a recovering opiate addict, there are some days (even if it's just for a moment) when you've been clean for months and you still have your hand on the phone, ready to make that call.
I'm just saying that it would be a lot harder for ME to resist the urge with a bottle of dilaudid in my cabinet...:D

Re: Opiate addiction: treatment study
Do wah diddy dilaudid sure be pretty. I guess if people were getting it prescribed? More than a little would be getting sold on the street. Then what'll they do with those people: cut off the addicts? Let them go back on smack? I guess if dilaudiders were smart, they'd sell it in bulk & let someone else deal them out. Who knows.
It certainly is a puzzle.
