Quite possibly a very bad idea...
Alright, I'll make this quick. What if one were to take out as many loans as possible, then skip the country? I'm talking about maxing out all the credit cards you can get your hands on, getting all those payday cash advance loans (the sharky ones with 99% interest you see on TV), borrowing money from family/friends/acquaintances/institutions, etc.
What kind of resources will the government devote to your search? If they do find you, what kind of trouble will you be in when you get back to the states? I suppose they'll first try to take anything you have left, but what would there be in terms of jail time/charges?
I doubt any resulting response will be utilized, I just was just curious. You never know when you might just want to...get away...

The more money you steal/fraud from institutions/people, the more ressources your federal gouvernment will devote to track you down. Have you ever heard of Interpol?

Do it. Then stay out of the country a mere seven years and all your debts will be forgiven. It's a worthy scam. At least that's what my fairy godmother told me. . . the govt wont do shit to find you - they have enough problems to deal with . . .

Re: Quite possibly a very bad idea...
I was thinking about this recently, though I'm unsure of the legal differences in Britain. I was also thinking...what if you were diagnosed with a terminal illness and told you had 3 months to live. What's to stop you taking out as many loans as you can get, maxxing out your credit cards etc etc. This money can then rest in the bank of a close relative you wish to have a nice life after you're gone. Then, you snuff it. The debts legally can no longer pass down to the next of kin or a family member...so surely they must be written off? And then, the person you decided should have a nice life will have a lot of money to play with!...Problems?

I realize that, but you can get cash advances on credit cards, can't you?

You'd want to have permanent residency in whatever country you plan to go to - or at least a fairly long work visa.
It isn't so simple to go to another country and stay there as some people might think.

Re: Quite possibly a very bad idea...
You wont be able to get more than a couple hundred grand, if that. So unless you plan on moving to a third world country and living very modest that money wont last you very long.
