Re: possibly active mushroom?
I don't know, but SWIM probably shouldn't eat it. SWIM could, but SWIM might end up dead, lying on the floor with puke oozing out the corner of his mouth. Try if you want.

I personally disagree. SWIM is a fucking moron, look in bad ideas. He's probably spent more time in jail than Ted Rogers.

Re: possibly active mushroom?
that kind of looks like the kind people around here pick. here being southeast texas. Except the colors aren't as deep/defined. like this picture looks more gray instead of a copper/brown/purple colors we get here.

Re: possibly active mushroom?
wondering what other people thought
While it's a look-alike for about ten or twenty other things, of which one or two might be active, this-other-people thought... that crap with blue-purple spores seldom ends up looking like it has white gills, even if it does.
If you plan on getting into the picking-mushrooms-and-asking-for-advice-on-the-internet thing, or even the picking-mushrooms thing, learn the key features which seperate one genus from another. The cap, margin, and stipe are well shown - but you can't see the gill attachments in the picture 'n there's not a pair of sporeprints on black and white pieces of paper next to it in the photo.
'n, oh, yeah... we can't tell if it's without an annulus, or if the annulus is simply high enough up to be obscured, 'n I can't see for the life of me if it has a bulbous base, which becomes rather important with "the spore color MIGHT be white, but we can't tell."
The real fun comes from staining and microscopic spore measurement and examination.
