Lolz Wow Cheater Gets Fined $3M
Quote:
World of Warcraft creator Blizzard looks set to get $6m (£3.36m) from the makers of a software 'bot'.
The cash is part of a deal brokered by Blizzard and MDY Industries - the maker of the WoWGlider software 'bot.
Blizzard embarked on the case against MDY claiming that the World of Warcraft Glider software produced by the company infringed its copyright.
The Glider software lets Warcraft players automate many of the repetitive steps the game involves.
Cash call
In July US District Court Judge David Campbell ruled that the MMOGlider, as the software is now known, broke the terms of the license that players agree to when they play World of Warcraft (WoW).
The Glider software is the creation of MDY founder Michael Donnelly who is thought to have sold more than 100,000 copies of the $25 (£14) program.
It proved popular with many WoW players as it helped them automate the many repetitive tasks, such as killing monsters and scavenging loot, required to turn low level characters into more powerful ones.
The damages award could have been bigger if MDY had not won some of its arguments about damages in court, said game law expert Benjamin Duranske on the Virtually Blind website which has lead coverage of the case.
MDY's case was also helped by an admission in court that it would be reasonable to pay some form of damages.
The award could be delayed if Blizzard appeals against the judgement which threw out its claim to double or triple the cash settlement.
The case is due to go to court again in January 2009 when the remaining issues in the legal conflict look likely to be settled.
At issue will be whether MDY broke the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act and whether Mr Donnelly will have to pay the damages from his own pocket.

Guy got ownt hard. Even if he did make a little proffit thats how many years of his life out the window? Or at the desk, i suppose, as it may be.
I don't personally play WOW. Downloaded the Trial and got seriously bored. Atleast on FPS's it's virtually impossible to cheat due to PB ect.

It's bullshit. The people that used it broke the license agreement. He just made some software. Next they need to go after the people who post game exploits.
Protip: You don't HAVE to play on Blizzard's servers.

I've been doing shit like that for about a year now and I've only ever been banned temporarily for having a pet called ColonCamper. Hell, I've even talked about abusing someone's dead mother and didn't get warned about that.
For obvious reasons, Blizzard is very lenient towards paying customers.

Unless you believe he developed a software program that was capable of interacting with the WoW software, without actually installing the WoW software at any time, then he broke the EULA as well.
WoW wouldn't have gone after him if he gave the program away for free. They would have lost the case if they did. They went after him because he made money off of the program.
The company even agreed that they should pay damages. They admitted it, and you post here to defend them?

So because so and so says such and such, that means it is right?

Yes, it does. The majority has and always will choose what is right, and in this case, the majority agrees that the decision was the correct one. If the defendant himself agrees it was the right decision, it isn't even up for discussion.

I'm sorry, but I'm a huge spelling Nazi.. Why do people type "ect." opposed to the correct abbreviation (etc.)? The word is etcetera, why would anyone say ect.?
Unless we're talking about Toyota's automatic transmission with ECT (electronic controlled transmission), then it's okay...
/rant.

People type "ect." because the pronounce the latin incorrectly. Instead of saying ET-SET-ER-A they say EK-SET-TERRA, leading them to use the wrong abbreviation: Ek (e) Set (c) Terra (t).

Yes. Yes, this is exactly why i do it
Also, why has this thread turned into a freaking debate? Come on, cheating is cheating. Of all the things to do on the internets, in my opinion it's the lamest.
You might as well hire a really expensive escort and then walk around town with her going "HEY FUX U GAIS I HAZ LEIK MEGA HOT CHICKS LOLZ" then try and insist to people that it's a real relationship, despite the fact that everyone knows she's on that poster on the wall behind the theatre, offering residential "services".
Well, thats how i think of it anyway. If your doing it you seriously just need to find something else in your life, and probarly need a kick up the arse. Even posting in a forum like this is better so, atleast your potentially putting a grin on someones face, and putting some amount of thought into your post.
Blizzard are just another huge company taking advantage of a another huge extravaganza- like McDonalds, and such and such. IMO they just got $3M extra... and that guy lost $3m. Hopefully it'll make him realize that he really, really needs to find another way to live his life.
