Sex Education - why is it failing in some places?

This is to carry on from something brought up in ilikeeggs's thread as not to derail it.
In response to Agent 008 (about parents), I do think there is alot to be said about the British still having residues of a taboo culture. Lots of parents will talk to their children about sex and relationships - but alot are too embarrassed. It's not that every teenage pregnancy is brought about by lack of parental input - but it could help a good bit.
I'll try and find some sex ed related stats for Britain - some of them are shocking.

Parents and Schools aren't doing enough to help teach people about sex.
And binge drinking chavs don't help either. They get drunk and end up in each others beds resulting in inbreeding. Then they go on the Jeremy Kyle show because the mum wont let the dad see the child because he won't pay her any money from his dole.

There was a very good show on Channel 4 at 8pm tonight. They have a website too.. looks like some great info for those that are worried/mis-guided about sex, sexuality, and relationships.

Re: Sex Education - why is it failing in some places?
i got some pretty good sex ed last year and the year before, we had good teachers for it though, they weren't uncomfortable or anything, and the guy we had was really cool, but people in my school still get pregnant. I think it shows that no matter how much yo know about it before hand, it all goes out the window when your really drunk/ drugged up.
Still, i'd hate to be in America and have abstinence only sex education, i really think that is a load of bull.

Re: Sex Education - why is it failing in some places?
My parents have never spoken to me about sex or relationships or any of that shiz.
And my sex education at school was above average I think; we learned how to put a condom onto a plastic penis thing.
I learned all I know from totse and www.hardsextube.com

Re: Sex Education - why is it failing in some places?
When I was in high school (which wasn't too long ago) there was very little sex ed. The only thing we were "taught" was when you took health class, they had a speaker come in for one class period just to teach about how great abstinence is and the speaker would say "I'm a virgin and I love it", when in reality, the speaker was a virgin because she was way too fat and obnoxious and carried herself poorly.
Schools try to teach that being abstinent is the only way. I am sure it's a good idea to be abstinent to prevent STDs, unwanted pregnancies, but they are preaching to the wrong choir because most high school kids will not want to remain sexless, and even if they did a lot of hormones don't want them to.
Not to mention they go about it completely wrong.

Still all boils down to bringing up. In my family, alcohol wasn't a big deal. My parents pretty much said "You can drink and smoke whatever you like, as long as you do it in our company". They actually let me have a puff at a cigarette when I was a kid. Also, it really helps if one of the parents stays at home with the kids. This sort of stuff creates trust - which means that kids will be a bit more rational when they are teens and won't go getting shitfaced once they leave home - because it'd never been forbidden, it'd never been particularly interesting and exciting.

My grade five sex ed was awesome and thorough and my grade 9 sex ed was shit.
Why?
My grade five teacher was a crazy hippy chick who wasn't afraid to delve into taboo issues and my grade nine teacher was Catholic. 'nuff said.
I think sex ed is so fucking important, and should have far more crazy hippy chicks teaching it, for the sake of learning.

I know, it's one of the many things wrong with society here. what good does it do? the sex ed I got just told us the basics then pounded away at abstinence.
uh yeah, that's great, but in the real world, people like to feel good, and should know how to protect themselves while doing it. it's a fair bet that the only people in my 8th grade class who are still virgins probably want to have sex, and it's probably around 10%. wow, fucking idiots.

Re: Sex Education - why is it failing in some places?
I learned sex ed from this forum, experience, and late night radio.
Fuck sex education in schools.
I was in a private school too, they're supposed to have good education, that's what you pay for right? Except everything was twisted by strong christian overtones, and any information we got boiled down to "No sex means no chance of STI's or pregnancy."
My parents were no better. They never talked to me about sex until they found out I was having sex, and even then all they did was tell me that they didn't really want me doing it.
What the fuck is wrong with people? Teenage guys are going to fuck sooner or later. Give them facts so that they don't fuck it up. Strengthen the bond between you and your child. Do your job schools.

Sex ed in america isnt all about abstinance. Hell, i went to a christian school for a couple years and though they always promoted abstinance pretty heavily, we were still taught about other stuff. so at least here we learned some real info.

Re: Sex Education - why is it failing in some places?
I went to a catholic school that had a mandatory semester long class called, christian sexuality. It was actually a really fucking awesome class. Considering the school was religious they actually covered just about everything and barely chimed in with the abstinence part. I suppose I was just lucky.

Re: Sex Education - why is it failing in some places?
Sex Ed fails in the UK because we aren't prepared to tell children the truth
ie that Sex is nature's way of making babies. Plants exchange pollen, mammals fuck....
Not sure about the Duck Billed Platypus, though.
Nature has been doing it a long time and she's got real good at it.
Sure sex can be a whole heap of other things, in a caring sharing politically correct relationship and yes that was sarcasm because the Fem-Nazis and 'concerned' politicians have actually managed to come up with a Sex Ed that is worse than no Sex Ed at all (which is what I got at school 25 years ago). BUT first and foremost sex is about survival of the species.
We have to get kids to understand that and when they have then we need to make sure they don't think babies are cute dolls or disposable clumps of cells for that matter. They need to know that a baby is total commitment, that your whole life will change forever.
In these days of single children families a lot of teenagers have never actually changed a nappy, fed a baby etc.
If we can get kids to learn those two facts then and only then can we start with 'personal responsibility' and 'personal hygiene'.

Re: Sex Education - why is it failing in some places?
I wanted to add something.
We teach our kids it all the wrong way round and thats why it isn't working. We teach kids that sex is a fun thing to do in their spare time and that there are dangers and how they can avoid them. But unlike STD's, pregnancy isn't a risk of sex but the objective as far as nature is concerned.

Re: Sex Education - why is it failing in some places?
In the US, the government will cut funding if you don't teach an outdated, religiously based sex ed class. They'll tell you condoms fail and are useless, the pill fails and is useless, and bombard you with graphic pictures of STDs. They also tell you to "wait until marriage" and aren't allowed to discuss things such as the morning after pill or abortion. That's why it fails here.

Re: Sex Education - why is it failing in some places?
How do you effectively educate someone, in a classroom setting, on what makes for a good relationship?
I'm not sure that it's realistically possible. An open and informed discussion about sex isn't difficult, but relationships are complicated things. What teacher, or person, is qualified?
Sex Ed, in Canada, is excellent, from what I've seen, heard, and experienced; however, some people won't even pay attention to these critical topics. I can't count how many basic sexual questions I've answered for people over the years.

Re: Sex Education - why is it failing in some places?
Here in Australia sex education from what I've experienced develops with the age of the child.
It started with basic how babies are made in a basic man and woman penis vagina thing in primary school but the whole time there was emphasise on the fact that the people having sex were emotionally involved and the whole when two people love each other very much thing.
High school sex ed focused both on the biology and the health issues and there were talks about relationships and film after film and talk after talk. I couldn't even remember how many guest speakers I've heard talking about sex, relationships, drinking/drugs, even speakers who spoke about their STDs
It wasn't the most interesting topic but all of it stuck really, because of it being continued and repeated.
I mean there are things that you just can't teach but with most bases covered its alot easier to make the right choices.

Re: Sex Education - why is it failing in some places?
I think my school must have really good sex ed. In year 7 we did it from a purely scientific sense, more indepth in year 9 with std's added. Then 9 and 10 we went into the emotional and social consequences and benefits. The teachers were very comfortable with the topic and from about year 9 onwards assumed some of us were sexually active. Abstinence was only briefly mentioned, only saying it's the only 100% safe, but condoms good.

Re: Sex Education - why is it failing in some places?
"Ma, how are babies made?"
"Sex"
"Oooooh".
My sex talk with mother when I was 5, father offered to buy me a hooker when I was 15. That's basically all the sex things me and my parents have discussed.
We had sex education when I was 11 in 6th class, but I don't really remember it. I think they showed us a drawing of a vagina and discussed johnnys a bit.
I don't really know how I picked up things about sex, but I didn't know my foreskin was supposed to retract till recently, so I suppose I was failed by the education system on that one.

That's more than I got. My mother just sent me to a seminar ran by the school that was supposed to open up the parental discussion then gave me the internet to answer my questions. She assumes I've been having sex since 14 and just stays out. It works.

Re: Sex Education - why is it failing in some places?
I currently go to a public high school in the US and it is required that students must pass a health course both freshman and junior year in order to graduate. A lot of the health class involves sex education and the only way they promote abstinence is by saying "The only way to be completely 100% safe from pregnancy and STD's is to not have sex." That is the only thing they say promoting abstinence. They teach us a good amount of info about different methods of birth control and different methods of STD prevention and treatment. They also do a "project" where you need to live a weekend/schoolday with either a lifelike baby doll who cries every 4 hours or so or you have the option of wearing probably a 30 pound stomach weight for a day or two. You then have to do a report on it and go pretty in depth. As far as STD's, they talk about prevention, symptoms, and treatment of most of the common STDs. While I agree that our Sex Ed is not perfect, it is not nearly as bad as you made it to sound. Atleast at my school.
sorry, i wasn't trying to say that everyone in america is taught abstinence only sex ed, i just know it happens in some parts of the usa and your government spends a lot promoting it
