B&N: Laughingstock of the retail world.
Have you ever experienced any trouble lifting from Barnes & Noble? In my experience, they're just sad, security-wise.
I know for a fact that all the bottom floor cameras are fake, as the employees can cover the whole bottom floor themselves. As for the the cameras upstairs, the music section has one or two, almost always right in front of the checkout, pretty likely to prevent employee theft. Even if the cameras aren't all fake, there are still tons of blind spots throughout the high shelves upstairs.
Their RFID stickers can be peeled off or scratched to the point of being useless, and are not in all the books either.
The only real threat would be the security guard at the gate, but you're not obligated to consent to a search, and they can't chase you outside the doors. In any case, the guard can be avoided by going through the coffee shop door (if your B&N has one).
So for those who have encountered difficulty in liberating some books, have any details? Am I completely wrong about everything? Is my B&N a minority and a shitty store?
Are you the walrus?

yea ive had no troubles getting books from there before. I was surprised because they had a lot of books i need for college.
The one I go to doesnt even have any cameras in it at all. All the books I take dont have any kind of security on them whatsoever. I just grab my books off the shelf, go to a seat in the corner out of sight from the main desk, and slip them into my bag.

There is a cop at my BN on weekends. Yes, a cop. Not a security guard. Other than that the place is easy as shit. There are RFID or whatever stickers hidden randomly in books at mine but are easy to get out and the adhesive hasn't even been peeled off from the paper (like a sticker before it is peeled off the sheet).

Hmm, they put the RFID in at a random page? At mine, they just stick it on the inside of the back cover.

Either that or the spine. It's not like stealing books from any major book retailer is hard , they don't attract shoplifters like an electronics store does for obvious reasons.
Which makes it a prime target for eBay resales or smaller book stores that buy books for cash. But like you gotta steal lots of books to make good coin bro , and like how the fuck you going to get out of the store with like 10 books . Stealing from bookstores to make good money requires you to make lifts on the regular , and at that point they will recognize you unless you can disguise yourself real easy.

Pick out the small skinny books that have high prices. There are plenty of skinny books that run for $19.95. If you're not a fat ass you can fit as many as 5 in your waistband and some underneath the armpits. I have done this many a time at myself. They get tons of regulars that go in all the time. Nobody has ever been suspicious of me. Return to a different B&N or even to a Borders. An easy $100+ in store credit each time. I usually save up the books though and say I had a birthday or whatever.

Well, I can just use my schoolbag, but even without one, it can't attract that much attention having a messenger bag instead.
You're right about regularity, though. I usually wait 1-2 weeks per trip, depending on how much I lifted. Most was probably a good $70 out of six books. And the resale idea is good too (probably better, the local bookstore probably will sell them cheaper than chains), but all the books I take are ones I want to read

It's true. I found a medium-sized book that was $35, an easy fit for a bookbag. Still, on days when there's no security guard/cop, just walking out is superbly effective.
As for employees, it's like any other retail job, there's assholes who will watch you like a hawk from the moment you open the door, and then there's employees who take books themselves. Still, better to not make it a regular, everyday kinda schtick. But when you're pulling an average $40 every trip, that'll last a while.

Re: B&N: Laughingstock of the retail world.
it's like a fucking library where they don't bother you if you don't return the books. whenever i want a book, i just go get it and take it from barnes and nobles.
and the cameras are real. i've seen the moniters, but the person next to them has to check people out as well, so i wouldn't worry. furthermore, i have yet to see a quarterbacker working there. mostly young and old women. not a problem.
