making conversation comfortable and natural?
I have always been socially awkward, I tend to be quiet because I don't have much to say. I think its the fact that I don't know/care much about the things usually talk about, but I don't feel like they would relate/care to the things I COULD be social about. Sorry if thats confusing.
It isn't like I'm not trying, I'm just really shy. Among friends I'm comfortable with I can be pretty funny, but it doesn't translate over to meetings with new people. I seem dull and uninteresting.
I've been trying to meet new people, going to parties and such, hoping I'll get better at socializing, but I don't feel like I'm improving. I'll be talking to someone in a class and I'll try to bring up something of interest we can talk about like (how was your weekend?), but instead of taking off into an interesting conversation, it just slows down until we both just kind of sit there awkwardly.
This just feels like a part of my life that I've missed out on, and need to fix before I feel happy.
btw, freshman in college, play sports, drink/smoke weed.
If anyone with similar experiences can give me some advice, that would be great.

You have to nullify yourself up a bit. Just learn not to care.

Re: making conversation comfortable and natural?
Heh, I'm 2nd year in college now, and pretty much in a similar situation to you.
Except after a year of trying, I have concluded that it's not me that's the problem but all the nigs that I study with.
I mean, think about how you made your friends before. It just kinda happened, right? It's not like you were specifically out to make friends, or doing something special specifically to get those friends. Well, at least that's how it's always happened to me.
Now here, I've been doing the same thing at first. Except everyone was acting really gay, trying to pretend to be something they're not, and desperately trying to fit in the group that they thought was "popular" and "cool".
Oh, not everyone. There was another group, "the outcasts". That one was comprised of mostly ugly and/or incredibly dull people with hardly any sense of humour and/or will to improve - e.g fat people who wallowed in their love for pizza and what not.
The two groups obviously never talked to each other, because if they did, something terrible would have happened. Or that's the impression they gave me.
Then there was me - being generally chill about everything, chatting to anyone who seemed interesting and not being part of any of the retarded groups (although I tried to party with the "cool" "clubbing" group, they were all indulging in dull activities acting like it's the most fun they can have, over and over again).
Ever tried talking to someone, approaching someone, only to have to do all the work? Ever start thinking "hey, why am I doing all the work? Why do I have to keep the conversation going, without any effort or interest from their part? That's not how friendships are made"
So basically I came to a conclusion that it's a problem with them, not with me, and I'll just have to hang on and look for the right person. Meanwhile, it's a good time to go to the gym, get new skills, and do other self-improvement.

Re: making conversation comfortable and natural?
Yeah making sustained smalltalk is pretty difficult to do. When you don't know the person/have nothing in common, you either have to change topics every 2 minutes or keep making general inane comments to keep the convo going. My problem isn't shyness, it's just hard to keep up conversation when there's nothing to talk about.
My only advice is to just hang out in groups. You can make comments every now and then, but you don't feel compelled to keep up an entire conversation. Listen in and learn more about the other people, and maybe when you do have to talk to someone 1-on-1 you'll have something to talk about.
Of course, it helps if the other person likes talking and leading the conversation...

Re: making conversation comfortable and natural?
Actually I find smalltalk to be quite easy. Just keep asking the other person questions about him/herself. Most people are quite happy to talk about themselves endlessly.

Re: making conversation comfortable and natural?
i am the same as you. very quiet, observant, reserved. but secretly i'm very passionate and intense.
"the harder you try, the less you succeed. don't try at all and get everything you need." it's my personal mantra.
stop caring about being social. put less effort into always saying the right thing and just be friendly. people love to talk about themselves so just be agreeable and ask questions.

True, I never really went out of my way to make friends in high school, but it was so small that I had classes, sports, breaks, and would see everyone multiple times.
Now I'm meeting new people, sometimes I try to carry the conversation, sometimes they do, or we both try, but it seems to end badly. Maybe its my fault? I am kind of quiet, don't talk about myself much (don't like to put myself down or brag).
I have thought about just focusing on grades/working out, but I worry about my already limited social skills atrophying.
That, and I get fucking bored and lonely. This has been the one thing thats been bothering me the most since I got to this school. I wish I had a few good friends up here that I could just chill with(not people that just get high all day)

I hung out in groups during high school, but then I realized that when it came to 1 on 1 conversation, I was useless. I would like to be able to be the person who can keep the conversation going, without spewing a bunch of retarded bullshit out at the same time, and still being myself.
to the people telling me to not care/try, doesn't that just end with me not having any friends?

Re: making conversation comfortable and natural?

Pretty much.
I actually find it a lot easier to lead a 1 on 1 conversation than trying to butt in in a group. A big group will very often have a person that would keep talking random bullshit and just won't shut up, making it hard to lead the conversation.
When you're 1-1, just chill, ask questions, make comments, and show some interest and share your experiences. It's easy.
My problem though, is - what do you do then? So you meet someone, you chat with them, it goes well, then you part your ways and maybe chat again in a month.
Heh, and the friends I made before were mostly made because I was forced to deal with some extreme situations with a small number of people over a long period of time. That shit really shows you who's who, and gets you to bond with each other.

no, not at all
put yourself in situations that will set you up for success. go talk to people, be friendly, and try to make friends. just don't worry about what will happen. it's so much easier to be social around your friends because you're not always worrying about what they think about you...
if you put yourself in ideal situations and stop caring if other people judge you, you'll find friends, i promise it

This, although sounding callous and arrogant at first, is not either of those things. It is the solution.
After a "how'd your weekend go?" followed by someone's boring-ass, uninteresting response by the random other person, elaborate with humor on one of your own experiences.
"Hmm, sounds like you had an o.k. time, that's cool. Me? Well, on Saturday, when I got out of the shower, I dropped a q-tip and I swear to god the little motherfucker bounced around the bathroom for 30 minutes with me chasing it. It ended up in the toilet and I had to get out a new q-tip. Shit was nutz."
All you have to do to stop being uninteresting is to elaborate on your life's travels.
Don't just be like "I went to the movies and saw a movie it was called ______ it ended up being okay, I guess."
Be like " Went to this theater with semen practically dripping from the walls where I ate and/or threw goobers and paid twice the price of the movie for my drink, which I spilled! I spilled it on my crotch too, so afterwards, I pretended to have wet my pants and my friends all laughed at me it was teh funnies."
Even if your life is uninteresting and dull, you can still do this if you have a little imagination and don't care about lying-2-get-laid or friends or dealers or whatever. Just ELABORATE the SHIT out of some mundane thing and you'll have everyone like "LAWL."
PS. floppy village tits.

I don't lie, I just anthropomorphise and add dramatic comedy whenever possible to passing events I experience. This often leads to more social interaction than I can even tolerate. *runs away*
I only presented lying as an option for people who have the same problem as OP but have no creativity AND a boring, uninspired life.
I may have a boring life, but when I'm hanging out with good friends, you bet your ass I can make the best of what I've got. Even if it involves chasing paper products around the floor.
You must be one of those "just the facts ma'am" people. I'm one of those "and then.......... you'll never believe..... afterwards.... and I was like OH SHIT!!" Most of my friends are too. Bonds us like glue.
This reminds me why I don't often go in S&A. To much fucking typing.
*makes asinine HB post out of spite*
*actually doesn't*

Wow. You are quite odd.
It seemed, centuries ago, you swore that you had me ignored, and only replied to say you couldn't read what I was saying to which I lol'd.
Now, since time has passed and you have forgotten, or perhaps expected me to have forgotten, you suddenly reply out of the blue to make clear I have been not ignored but in fact told I was ignored so you could soak up my sardonic replies in a sort of collecting, suffering silence.
Good show, WAN, good show.
BUT I CAN C WUT U DID THAR.

Actually, I did have you ignored. I just had you, along with everybody else, unignored because there are so few posters now.
Also, I didn't make posts to say I had you ignored. You had me confused with somebody else, because I HATE when others do that so I make it a point to never do that myself.

Re: making conversation comfortable and natural?
Giving a fuck what people think never really gets you anywhere.
Conforming to the rules to a degree, for survival is important.
But fuck, man. I only find myself caught up in this type of thinking when I'm not busy enough, making myself happy.
Just do what makes you happy. People are dying all over the world, going homeless, and losing their jobs and any one of them can be you one day. Do you really wanna look back and say "I am proud to admit I lived every day being concerned if Im social enough".
No man. Fuck it. Do whatever keeps you happy, and people will naturally be more attracted to you but that should never be the priority

Re: making conversation comfortable and natural?
This is where myspace / facebook / bebo works.
Remember the myspace slogan?
'A place for friends'.
Once you have met someone and had abit crack on a few times, add them on myspace or whatever, make the same sort of small talk, then ask them if they want to go for a drink / smoke some green or whatever, if you've got something planned ask them to come along, that sort of thing. I mean, it feels abit gay to ask some dude for his number after only speaking a few times, but if you do it this way it's much more relaxed and less homosexual, so they won't get wierded out.
Once you're contacting someone like this and doing things other than seeing them around town, everything works.
:D

Re: making conversation comfortable and natural?
Wow, a thread describing my situation perfectly.
I can be myself infront of a few close people, no one else, and it sucks.
It's not about "trying to be social" just because other people do it, it
s just that you eventaully need to meet other people.
I think I'm gonna start trying to figure a way around this, then i'll post back.
