California
Default Living on a boat

Alright, so, I live in southern California. Orange county area to be specific. Now, I can buy a 30 foot sail boat for around $4000.

These things have running water, toilets, and enough space for four people to sleep comfortably. Cooking could be done on a gas stove, and it never really gets too cold here. I could also rent a dock space for $140.

I'm not too sure of the policies relating to living on a boat, but I'm sure many docks allow it.

So, I can get a studio apartment for $1000, which is about 600 square feet, or I can get a boat for $140 a month.

... Aside from being fairly small, it's still a place to sleep. Why couldn't this work? Does anyone know of anyone who has done this?

Out here it is illegal and it probably is in California. You could tell the authorities that you live with a family member though. You will also need a PO box.

Thumbs up Re: Living on a boat

I've known many people to do this. It seems like it would be cool to me, but it might get old after a while.

I'd go for it if I were you. A boat offers much more privacy than an apartment, as you're not sharing walls and such. The only problem I can see is that many young women won't be too keen to go back to your boat to have sex. You never know though...

Yeah looked into doing this because sydney is a harbour city and living on a boat like the guy from lethal weapon would be FUCKING PLAYER!

Thing is most people who owns boats are fancy folk who dont want some guy living bum life on their marina, and theres enough nautical money that they do pick and choose - depending on where abouts your going to try and set yourself up.

Remember that your boat is going to need to be put up on slips for indefinite lengths of time every now and then to keep it afloat and unbarnacalised.

In the LA Times they wrote an article about a guy that does this. It's a great way to live cheap, do it.

My grandpa used to spend summers up here in MI on his boat, winters at his place in Florida. He only did it for a few years, I think he got bored sitting on a boat all the time.

Something like that'd get a girl wet in seconds. OP's boat probably would too, but that's cause it'd be leaky.
