Is this selfish?
TL/DR:
I want to move to Finland next year, but my girlfriend wants us to move out together and go to university. I am worried that I am being very selfish if I leave, but im terrified of being chained down and resenting her as a captor if I stay.
My girlfriend and I have been dating for almost two years and living together for one. Living with my mum and brother though, which is weird, because we cant afford to move out yet. This is because she is still in school. At the end of this year we had planned to move out together to a bigger city and she was going to have a year off while I started university. I am having second thoughts though because I have always wanted to run off to Finland.
This could be just a normal breakup, except she moved out of home so that we could be together after her zealous parents flipped out over us. She gave up most social interaction, her schooling was tainted by rumors (even amongst teachers) and even now she is only just back on speaking terms with her family. It seems that she has given up a huge amount for us to be together, and to make matters worse I have been pretty untrustworthy. On my side of things though I gave up social interaction too, I fucked my entire family around by putting a new person in it and instead of going to university this year I worked to help pay for her.
I had thought I had a wandering eye or something like that, but i'm often attracted to other people and now I am doubting if I even love her any more. I have always wanted to go to Finland, and after being trapped for a year I am almost desperate to leave, but I think this is a massively selfish idea. I know she could take care of herself next year, but she had already planned everything out and was really excited. Now I have found a huge load of info on suicide in places she thinks I can't find, and I am quite concerned that this may be attempted soon. Should I just leave her to her fate next year and do what I want? Or should I do what she wants and settle down? Either way the fear of loss and regret is massive, and I'm worried that if I act selflessly now that I will resent her later.
I read a few websites on being selfless but they just mention thinking of the people you care for. I thought about it and I don't really care for anyone. I hate the idea of being selfish, but I can't help not caring about them. Instead, I am asking for some real life opinions.
Thanks totse

Re: Is this selfish?
Personally, I don't buy selflessness. Sounds miserable. You got to live for you, and if you think Finland will make you happy and fix your problems then give it a go. Don't be callous about it though. Set your girl up before you go. Other than that, sounds like a wonderful opportunity.
Course, don't get in the habit of running or you'll end up my neighbor.

Re: Is this selfish?
Go to Finland. Invite her, but don't give her money for an airfare and tell her the wrong address of where you're going.
Or one day just get up and say you're going to go down to the shops to get some milk, and never come back.

Re: Is this selfish?
I think it'd only be selfish if you had a kid together and you were just running away from your problems. But if this is something you've wanted to do, don't let anyone hold you back from being happy.

Go. You've already doubted it more than once, there is no chance. You know it. You're only prolonging the inevitable by staying.

First of all, you must live you own life. If she isn't right there with you, then she isn't the one.

Re: Is this selfish?
I did this. Me and my girlfriend had plans. Were together over a year. I got sick of tedious bickering, bought a plane ticket and left 2 weeks later. Best decision I've ever made. You my sir, are immature and need to grow up, as did I. This isn't a bad thing. Running away to Finland will most definitely do this. But the fact that you do want to run away says a lot about your maturity.
I miss my girlfriend heaps, but I know I'll end up with her one day. Do you think if you did run away that you'd up with your girlfriend one day as well?
The worst thing you could do is stay with her any longer if you're starting to think you don't love her, or are resenting her for holding you back. Get out there, travel the world, meet beautiful women, and if she still has your heart at the end, go back to her. If not, it wasn't meant to be. Just get out there man.

There's rules for situations like this.
Rule1. If you don't like the bitch anymore, move to Finland.
Rule2. If you got the bitch pregnant, move to Chile.

Fuck Finland, join the french foreign legion.
Actually, seeing how much ass finland kicked in the winter war, and how much france gets their ass kicked, maybe it's not such a good idea?

Re: Is this selfish?
I once went to Finland. Hot blondes everywhere! If you see a fat or ugly girl over there, chances are she is a tourist.
I mean seriously. It was like a wet dream. Starting from the stewardesses on the plane, to the hotel reception, to random girls in the street.
It was especially obvious, considering I went there after staying in England for far too long. When I came back, the occasional hot girl you can sometimes see in London looked ugly.
Move there or if you don't, I will.
Edit: have just actually read the OP. If you are going to leave, make sure you handle it with her in a mature way. You shouldn't have lead her on in the first place, but now that you've taken her, she is your responsibility. So don't just "go out for milk and never come back". Handle it responsibly.

Re: Is this selfish?
Is this selfish? yes, kind of. But does it mean that you shouldnt do whatever makes you happy? Nah.
You should do whatever you think will truly make you happy, as long as you dont purposely hurt other people. With this girl obviously you dont love her anymore so it's kind of like pointless to stay with her. not to mention unfair, because if you dumpher early, she will then move on and find someone else.

I hope you speak Finnish if you are going to live there. I'm considering the same thing after college and university, but I only know how to say 'Don't go into the forest!'.

Re: Is this selfish?
Is this selfish?
Yeah it’s selfish. She has given up everything for you, and has been completely selfless. Yes you have given up things for her, but nothing compared to what she has done. And then to be untrustworthy when she was living with you? And to have a ‘wandering eye’? If you love her, you would only have eyes for her. She should be the most beautiful person you have ever seen. She deserves better than you.
And considering you had BOTH planned to move out together, you are being a prick leading her led on and trying your best to make her feel alone.
To run off to Finland sounds great, but what will you do when you get there? If you don’t think you can afford to move out yet, how do you expect to move to Finland?
You know what, you should leave her to her fate and do what you want, especially when she is considering suicide. Then you can look back on it and realize how selfish you were and it can all be blamed on you.

Re: Is this selfish?
All I have to say is don't ever let some girl keep you from achieving the things you want to do with your life. If I ever got any true good advice from a married man it's that you've got to get EVERYTHING you've always dreamed of doing in your life before you settle down with a woman.

Re: Is this selfish?
I agree with the whole "get everything done, dont let the girl hold you back from anything" but this is not some middle school relationship, in some ways its more serious that marriage.
I say more serious, because in most marriages the girl has a place to go(to her friends, relatives, family) when there is a fight in the house, she has someone to talk to, help her through bad times. And in your situation, you ripped her out of everything just so you two could be together, and now you dont want her? Well guess what buddy, you got a kid on your arms, now you can be a peace of shit and abandon it, or you can be a man.
Do you think she cant feel you're getting cold to her, i mean why else would she plan a suicide?
I think its a fucked up situation, period. I feel you on the "not loving her " part, i know, you cant tell a heart to love. But now you have to look at her as your responsibility, and not you lover. I say, you should at least help her through the first year of Uni, and then when she finds someone new and sees the kind of ass you really are, thats when you can go to your Finland.
Finland will always be there, but the girl you once loved, won't.

How could he be to blame for her own free choices? Also, what's wrong with being selfish?

Re: Is this selfish?
This is your life and your time to explore. If you don't do it now, you will regret it for the rest of your life. As far as selfish... I don't think so. You can also turn it around and say that by trying to control you and keep you there she is being selfish. It's all in your perception. But in my opinion, if she was all important to you than you would not think about leaving her in the first place.

Make SURE absolutely SURE that you're sure you don't love her anymore. It could come back to fuck you in the ass pretty severely.
