115.2 kbps dial up?!
Has anyone tried this tweak and how could it possibly work? I found this at the link below. It says,
"This Trick is the BEST of All on the whole net.I tested in my pc and works great.
Right click :- My Computer - Properties - Click the "Hardware" tab -Device manager -Modems - Right click your Modem -Properties- Click the advanced tab-In the extra initialization commands box type the following code
AT&FX
Reboot your Computer and connect .Your Speed NOW will be 115.2 kbps"

That doesn't change your connect speed -- it changes the speed displayed though. Basically, you're changing how fast your modem says it's connected, regardless of real connection speed.

There is no "setting" in windows or otherwise that will speed up your connection to that extent. There are some other "tweaks" that you can try on broadband connections, but baseband 56k is pretty much....56k

But of course you can't reach that value.
There are some tricks but there isn't anything magical.
For example there is a software made by a telephone company that force you to download only parts of images: as a result you speed up your connection but get corrupted images smile.gif
Nothing really cool, just tricks until you get a better connection xD

Ok. If what you are saying is true, then could you please explain what just happened with my neighbors computer? First let give you his pc's specs. He is using an AMD 2600+ with a Gig of RAM and windows pro. He has a "smartlink" 56Kmodem. Now on a good day in the past he would get "49.2kbps", I just told him about this tweak and he wanted to try it.
After making the change and rebooting, he went on line. His speed was registering at "921.6kbps" his computer was slow before, but it was just flying like he had upgraded to DSL or Broadband or something.
Could something else have caused this sudden speed jump other than the tweak?
P.S.
Here's a screen shot of his modem speed that we took.

Re: 115.2 kbps dial up?!
There was no speed jump. That 921.6kbps is the speed from computer to modem, not over the phone line. That is all that the tweek does -- it shows you the speed computer-to-modem rather than over the line.
The only things that might have affected it would be things like phone line conditions, local weather, etc. His max speed is 52Kbps, like it always was -- so that's the highest speed he could have actually reached. If federal law allowed 56kbps, he could reach that speed, but at 57kbps his modem would be fried. Anything higher than that would also destroy the modem.

Ok. I get what your trying to tell me, but what I'm saying is that just a little while ago his computer was flying like it hasn't done before regardless of what the actual speed is of his modem.
Now whole weather thing could be an issue because we just had a little rain storm here. So maybe that was the culprit.

Re: 115.2 kbps dial up?!
More likely, if it was using a browser that you noticed a speed difference, is the use of compression by some servers to conserve bandwidth. A lot of those "internet accelerators" from various ISPs use the same trick -- they have a proxy that compresses the data to send it down the phone line.

Re: 115.2 kbps dial up?!
Whne I had dial up sometimes my speed would register at 115.2 kb/s. I never noticed any performance jump and it was still slow as hell. I wish there was a way to increase speed through dial up but there is no way. Kinda sucks. The only solution is to get broadband.

People will convince themselves of anything to justify having that dail-up line...
