Do people really ask this question? I thought they just assumed that you'd have sex with their daughter/son and spend their 3 questions trying to work out if you're an alright guy or not.

I mean, if you ask, you can only expect a lie. So you're basically trying to see how good a liar the guy is. While it's probably something you'll need to know sooner or later, it could probably wait. Although I suppose if you don't ask it at the first interaction it's a bit weird. Still I really doubt that they ask just so they can find out whether you're a good liar, they probably just have nothing else to say. I'd probably make small talk rather than ask that though.

No, parents haven't always loved me. For the majority of my life, I've been a terrible influence and more than a few worthwhile girls lost themselves in a party life-style or addiction after, or while, dating me. Of course, even then, some parents did quite like me.

Now, however, girls parents do seem to like me well-enough to invite me places and welcome me into their homes. I've stopped to realize that parents are just people and should be addressed as such.

I would not do that (if I were a guy and was asked the question) because I think people (including parents) dont like argumentative people (even though I think you are 100% right). I would probably just smile and change the subject, or say, "gee look at the time, we gotta get going" then grab the girl. No need to hang around parents like that; no matter what you say it will never please them.

You don't have to please or argue. Simply steer the conversation to let them know that you trust their daughter's judgment and find out if they do as well. They may know their daughter better than you do.
