Leaving Books in Public Places
What's the best way to make sure the next reader passes it on after reading? I know this isn't practical, but I'd like to increase the chances of the book(s) being circulated as much as possible.

Lie to them and say they will be the 12th person who has found this book randomly in a public place, then its cooler than some random psyco planting books at the mall.

The thing to do is establish a table somewhere that is used specifically for this reason. Write it on the table in a decorative fashion; finding an artist to help decorate it isn't a bad thought.

Re: Leaving Books in Public Places
A curse written in blood :
WARNING : Hello there, lucky one. This book contains unexplained magical powers. It has been said this book can give it's sincere reader lucks. But this book is also cursed. If you had received it, you MUST finish reading it. And after reading it, you must pass it to another person. If you didn't, the curse will haunt you and you will be killed in the end. But if you did all you're told, you would be blessed with lots of lucks in return. The last person who got this book didn't understand this warning which were written in Korean (or Japanese) originally, and dies as the result of the curse. Which is why I decided to translate this into English. Please believe, it is true.
And don't forget to include the warning in the said foreign language.....and use bad english for your warning as well...(imitate foreigners)
And warning : This post contains magical power, too. This post is also cursed. Once you read this post, you must post more than a reply in this thread. if you do, you will be blessed with tremendous luck. If you *DID NOT*, the curse will fall on you, and your account will suffers terrible fate, beyond imagination. The last user who didn't reply to this post not only was B&, but also had his account deleted as well. Don't say you haven't been warned.

Re: Leaving Books in Public Places
A physical table? Or a table table. Like the boxes on a sheet of paper. If the latter, it's a good idea. I'll get a bunch of people to write dates and bullshit locations in one of the blank pages in the book. And a note asking them to leave the book at a phone booth or park bench after reading. Like:
oct/07 - nyc
dec/07 - bay area
feb/08 - BC
etc
all in different handwritting and pen ink.

Re: Leaving Books in Public Places
In Korea they actually have bookshelves in their subways where people can take a book and leave it at the next station.
I don't really think that would work in a lot of places though...too many assholes. I'd say leave the book somewhere discrete. You want someone to find it, but you don't want it where vandals would come and tear it to shreds just for the hell of it. Leave it in a nice park on a bench or in some corner seat of a subway train that runs through a non-shitty part of town. Leave it in a cafe, perhaps.
What book is it?

Re: Leaving Books in Public Places
Which book are you going to do it with? I'd write something like this in the inside front cover:
The Wandering Library.
If you're reading this, then you are in possession of *book name here*. If this book interests you, take it home and read it, and when you are done, pass it to a new owner by giving it to a friend or family member, or by leaving it in a public place such as a train seat, a park bench, or an airport departure lounge. You may also like to write your name on the inside back cover, along with the location or city in which you found it, so future readers can know just how far it's been.
And probably include at least two fake owners in the back cover so people don't think they are the first.\

Re: Leaving Books in Public Places
whatever you do don't decide to leave books in public bathrooms because:
1) Nobody's gonna take home a book they found in a bathroom
2) The kind of people who would pick up a book in a public bathroom even for a few minutes are usually the kind of people who would then place said book directly in the toliet
Besides that there's not really much to add to the other suggestions

I'd like to increase the chances of the book(s) being circulated as much as possible.
Then scan them and distribute them over various P2P networks. Simple as that.

Well, I wouldn't do such a thing, although ripping/cutting out the last page would be a pretty good prank and there's also the drawing of swastikas and other things. Yes, well, I'm just saying that the mental image of someone going that is quite amusing to me.

Put a tracking device in it and then find where they sleep. As you watch them read it alone at night in their bed, brutually pleasure yourself as you think about how the book is changing their life as it did yours.

^lol
you should film the person reading the book, steal the book back then leave the video with the book in another public place.
