Are humans meant to be monogamous?
What do you think?
I personally find the idea of marriage to be kind of ridiculous. I mean, to stay with the same person for a few decades, day in and day out. Wouldn't you be bored? I would think that people would prefer variety in their lives, right?
Tell me what your thoughts are.

Re: Are humans meant to be monogamous?
So far, scientists have only found one species that's actually monogamous. It's a type of worm that has the male and female actually fuse bodies for life. Aside from that one species, monogamy does not exist.
They've done studies in animal populations that were once thought monogamous. As it turns out, a high percent of "fathers" weren't actually the fathers of the animals being raised.
That being said, we do have reason, which we can use (to an extent). Personally, I think that marriage was extremely useful in a time when people might be living to 30 years old. The point then was to have and raise as many kids as possible before you die. Anymore, that just seems silly because if you get married it could be for 50-60 years. Marriage is for having kids. Staying with someone for that long might work, but I think it's a dying tradition.
If you somehow find a person and you can happily stay with him or her for 50-60 years, then you're far luckier than I think I'll ever be.

Right now, fuck marriage in general.
However, if I did happen to meet a good woman, who has her shit together, and we could establish a healthy dynamic for the long haul; I wouldn't mind getting married and having a 2-4 kids. It's nice to know you have someone, and a family really does complete your life.

youre right. but youre also wrong.
im not a romantic, something id say is pretty easy to figure out given my username. but while it might be against the nature of youth, its not impossible.
and many, if not most, long term relationships do involve fucking around. its a fact of life. things change as you get older, and having smeone around can be more attractive. particularly after your youth is over, and that world shuts off to you for the rest of your life.
its not about eternal love, mostly, its about not being so lonely youre suicidal. this is hard to conceive, when were young, because were tougher mentally and options are galore. but as you get older it becomes a legit concern.
it, like everything, is a matter of personal preference and choice, subject to change.

MY thoughts.....not gods. not science. or anyone else's.....
We are not mean't to be monogamous, however, we seek it because it is infact possible. And when true monogamy is found it is irreplaceable....I thought I had it once, but I was young and dumb, and we screwed it up. Either way I am glad it happened....because if it didn't happen then....I would have kids and they would have to go trough that bullshit....I want them to be healthy and know that it is possible.
Marriage is rediculous if you don't love the person you are marrying(which happens VERY OFTEN). But if you honestly, truely love them....it will never fade or die.

Re: Are humans meant to be monogamous?
As far as I can tell, humans set themselves aside from animals because of the higher intelligence.
We feel more emotions and connect on personal level as opposed to animals who mate for reproductive purposes and move along to the next healthy specimen.
Having said that, there is still a very strong animalistic urge in people.
For example, I love my missus to pieces. I would never cheat on her and she is the girl I want to spend my life with. However, I can't stop myself looking at other girls. It happens. I feel comfortable with this.
I'm not going to touch them. I'll flirt with them but that's all.
To summarise, from my point of view, I would fuck every chick I could in every way imaginable given the chance but feeling the love and affection I do for my girl I would quell such urges and take them out on her instead!
We can be monogamous but it's all down to controlling one's self and using said higher intelligence to make the decision whether you would rather have a fuck or two with any chick or have that one person waiting for you to make you feel loved and wanted.

Re: Are humans meant to be monogamous?
On an animal level, it is the female's role to secure mating with the best genetic candidate, and ensure that she, and only she, breeds with him. It's the male's role to breed with as many females as possible, providing they're not dire.
The difference, of course, comes because females can only be pregnant with one male's offspring at once. Of course, once she has bore this offspring, she may choose to mate with another male.
There is no reason why we are "meant" to be monogamous. The feelings we have evolved, what we call love, are more accidental than anything.
Most people, at least most men, find they lose the spark from their relationship at some point. That's a hormonal hint that it's time to spread your seed elsewhere.
We consider ourselves so distinct from other animals, but we're not really. Our actions are just a battle between the animal instincts we're born with, and the social constructs we're brainwashed with from that point onward.
But really, there's no "meant" involved anyway. We're just accidents.
