Default Nicotine, Brain Damage, Cigs vs. Chew

There has been a study which shows long-term smokers (tobacco) end up lowering their IQ and causing measurable brain damage. Google "smoking lowers IQ" and you'll see what I mean. However, I don't trust the "experts" referecenced in the articles relating to the study that I have seen. That is why I have come here.

Is it the smoke and the shitty chemicals in commercial cigarettes that are likely causing this brain damage? Or is it the nicotine itself? Would chewing tobacco cause the same damage?

Thanks guys.

For all i know nicotine may actually increase your intelligence.

Also i remember:
They had some bullshit study in the UK a few years back.... it turns out that the smokers were forbidden to smoke during the test..... go figure.

Anything that reduces oxygen flow to the brain will have a negative affect in the long term.

Well this sort of makes sense if you think about it. Nicotine is a vasoconstrictant which means it makes blood vessels smaller. Carbon Monoxide is formed by burning anything and if you inhale it then some will get into your blood (where i believe it bonds to hemoglobin preferentialy compared to O2).

Smoking in general reduces lung capacity and surface area so less O2 is available to diffuse into the blood. Once it gets there the blood can't hold as much O2 (because of CO). and then less total blood is being pumped (or the same amount faster which also reduces diffusion) so your brain cells probably aren't getting as much O2. We know that hypoxia (lack of oxygen) can cause retardation if the hypoxia is severe enough. So it's possible that by smoking a lot you are causing small amount of hypoxia induced cell death.

I read a study a while back linking nicotine to a thickening of the metasynaptic membrane in rats leading to an increase in objecive cognition, maze times and reflexes over a period of 18 months.

That sounds like nonsense to me, but if it does have an effect I wouldn't think it would be any worse than drinking coffee everyday.

Dude if you are gonna claim something like that, PLEASE provide references to your claim, at LEAST the TV channel that aired the report, or something, because it sounds like more propaganda to me......

I did, I said if you Google "smoking lowers IQ", the first four results are what I'm talking about, they all refer to the same study.

Here's a link to the ABC report: http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200510/s1489695.htm

One of the smartest people I've ever met smoked for a good chunk of her life, and she's still brilliant.

There are pros & cons to the use of Tobacco.

For any smoker who wishes to see fairly quick subjective results: stop smoking for 3 or 5 days. If you are at all much aware of your mind and body you should see many things.

These observations may be of things both pleasant & unpleasant.

O RLY?

I love how I ask about brain damage on here and I hardly get a response, but some dumbass on the first page makes a thread about shoving Xanax up his ass because he thinks 5 mg rectally will give him a better time than 5 mg orally and people go apeshit, not realizing that either way, unless he's a fatass, he's going to black the fuck out and do a bunch of stupid shit he won't even remember.

People wonder why drugs aren't legal, look at fucking TOTSE and Bluelight, it becomes obvious.

Buy 'em online. It's cheaper, too. I forget the old online cigarette depot but they had a ton of brands and the cartons were relatively cheap.

I haven't found much difference between cigs with added chems & "natural" smokes. Can you really imagine that with all the harsh chems in the smoke, all the chems with their active electron shells ready to bind with the chems in your body? That natural tobacco is that much safer?

I heard a Doctor say that nicotine releases sugar into the bloodstream & this allows the brain to be more active. This only lasts a few minutes, thus leading to the urge for more nicotine. He said that when ceasing the use of nicotine it takes a few weeks to re-jig your brain.

As I say: if you use tobacco & stop...for a few days you can see many changes in both brain & body. It's all there for you to see...if you'll only pay attention.

There are both pros & cons. Which: you can see for yourself.

Because brain damage caused by smoking over a period of decades is going to be so easy to see by quitting smoking now.

I pretty regularly go through half a pack of cigarettes, don't smoke for 3-4 days, then go through another half a pack and repeat. I guarantee I feel pretty much shit-all of a difference in my life.

You are too distracted to see. It is well known to science that the use of tobacco retards nerve function. Eyesight is sharper if you don't smoke, for instance. If you can't notice?

Perhaps you're too into your own dream. Wake up.

Don't tell me to fucking waking up. This pseudo-mystical-zen-bullshit may work with fools you meet in the real world, but TOTSE attracts a different audience.

I can't notice? Fuck yeah, I can't notice. One of the first ways I can tell a nicotine buzz is on is my vision sharpens. This has happened to me every time I've smoked since my first cigarette. So maybe you should pull YOUR head out of YOUR ass and get some experience/balls.

If you plan to use tobacco, use swedish snus. It's supposedly less carcinogenic, and it has higher nicotine content.

It's delicious as well :3

Nicotine is, as far as I'm concerned, a nootropic.
