People cheapening 'I love you'
I take that phrase very seriously, but evidently others don't. I hear other people say it like it's some casual catch phrase, and it really bugs me that they're dampening its effect. Especially when they say it to someone I actually do love.
Now that I've typed it it seems a bit trite to worry about, but I want to see how you guys feel about it.

Re: People cheapening 'I love you'
This annoys me tremendously, people throwing around "I love you" like it's nothing. Back when I was 16 I think, this one guy I dated started saying it after like, 2 days. Did not please me at all. Don't say it unless you absolutely mean it. And I think you only mean it when one day, out of nowhere, after being with someone for a while, it just pops out uncontrollably. Like gas, but happy. Usually.

Re: People cheapening 'I love you'
Eh, I'll say it casually, now and then, outside of a relationship situation to express platonic affection or whatever. I'll often just casually say "I love you" to someone I think is awesome as a form of high-praise... There are many forms of 'love', though, and I make no indication of it being the romantic kind. Also, the surrounding context generally makes it clear what I mean. I'm not sure if this is 'devaluing' it in the way you're talking about, though.
In any other sense, I can't imagine saying it at all. I mean, there are people I've been quite fond of, romantically, but no feelings so heavy that they could be called love, so in those situations, I don't say it, because it's too easy to be misinterpreted, which tends to lead to a lot of resulting shit. I'd rather just say something safe and non committal like "I like spending time with you/sleeping with you," because that is more likely to be true. It doesn't have that same ring to it, though...

Re: People cheapening 'I love you'
I think you're lonely and you've seen too many faggy chick flicks and family films so you've got this retarded idea that the sentence "I love you" is some magical sentence that should only be used 100% seriously. People can love whoever the fuck they want and it doesn't need to take a long time. I think you've got some mental problems to be pmsing over people's casual use of the sentence "I love you" when you think it isn't being used in your opinion of the proper way to use it.
Cheapening a sentence? lol

Re: People cheapening 'I love you'
Agreed. It annoys the shit out of me, I wouldn't feel comfortable saying it unless I meant it, and I have been in that situation before. The trouble is there really is no middle ground, it's straight from like to love. But I suppose you can express love better through actions anyway.

Re: People cheapening 'I love you'
It's cheapened because people like to hear that they're loved. I tell people straight up that the term "I love you" is not a common term for me and that they should avoid using it unless they're family or plan to rip my clothes off later.

Re: People cheapening 'I love you'
I say I love you all the time, mostly to my friends. I always mean it, never in a homosexual way or anything, but I do love my friends. I actually say it quite a bit, and I sometimes struggle with not saying it to some people, especially girls after spending the night with them, even though I don't mean it in the "I love you and wanna spend the rest of my life with you" way. I just mean it the same way I say it to the rest of my friends.
By the way this is my first post in about 6 months. Awesome. I thought I kicked this shit.

Aha! Now you see my plan all along!
In retrospect it felt like I was just being a big bleeding vagina all over this thread but in retro-retrospect I stand by what I said. To me it's mostly that if everyone else is saying it casually then they might think you are too. That's all. I guess you could always tack on a 'for srs' on the end, plus as someone else says it's contextual.

Re: People cheapening 'I love you'
Agree, but also, kinda strange in a way, me and my girlfriend who have been dating for almost 3 years always say i love you after done talking to each other, we whole-heartily mean it, but it has become semi-casual just because of becoming so use to each other it's almost as if it has become a catch phrase because we say it so often.

Re: People cheapening 'I love you'
I agree. Throwing it around like it's nothing kinda pisses me off. If I tell someone I love them, I mean it.
