Default How fast would money become worthless?

Basically I work and go to school, my idea was to get through school with no debt. I'm not going anywhere expensive at the moment, and should be set for funds, provided they don't become worthless.

Basically, is that really a risk in the next 5 years? Anyone have any expertise opinion to be able to answer that question?

i'm not sure if/when cash is going to become worthless, but money will always be there. If your worried about the economy going down, you could buy some materials that will always have a high value. That should keep your money safe.

Like gold? Yeah that's a good investment.

For example, if you would have bought gold in 1980. You would have lost more than half of your money in 3 years time. And your invest would have gotten back it's value this year. That's almost a 30 year investment with 0% profit.

Nothing is a sure investment. But the savest would be government bonds.

What they're saying is that nobody can give you a real answer. It's uncertain.

Fza, that's an interesting fact. Do you have more?

This. Are you planning on using some of your funds during those 5 years? Because if you are then you will be trading government bonds. If you trade at the wrong times it could give you a loss. However buying a bond and keeping it for 5 years is very safe and you will earn a positive real interest rate.
