Games People Play Games People Play is where to discuss personal computer, video game console, and arcade hardware and software - be it RPG, Sim, Strategy, Fighting, Action/Platform, or any other category. Although discussion of modern platforms/software will most likely dominate, discussion of classic videogame/computer hardware and software is always enjoyable, and certainly welcome - ESPECIALLY since there are public domain/shareware emulators of nearly every older computer/console available these days. Here's a taste of what awaits you: Nintendo-vs-Sega-vs-Sony, Console-vs-PC-vs-Mac, Hardware spec sheets/information, Industry news and discussion, Software reviews, IRC conference announcements/Reports, Emulators, Emulators, Emulators! ... and much, much more!

Arrow Buying Games: Collectors Edition - Yay or Nay

I was just wondering how you guys felt about the wave of CE versions of games. Seems that every big title (and some that aren't) are released with a CE now either at the time of the game's release or not long after. These "special" editions include things like special cases, extra DVD content such as the making of the game, toys, posters, bobble heads ect. Hell, Dead Space has a $150 edition that comes with a Graphic Novel and Animated Movie of unknown quality. Are we supposed to just shell out over twice the price to get some possibly crappy ass movie with the deal?

It's all obviously just a way for developers to compensate for the rising costs of the general game production but does all of this seem worth the extra price to you or do you normally just go for the pure gaming experience?

For me it all depends on the game. I've been a HUGE Fallout fan since part one and I'm most definitely going for the CE of that game. It's got to be a game that I've been waiting for or am just totally stoked about to shell out the extra scratch for some schwag. I don't even like watching "The making Of:" DVDs and I know that the "Art Books" are just going to end up on a shelf collecting dust after I've flipped through them once or twice so that's generally not a great incentive for me.

Only games that I MUST have do I try to buy the CE game as well as CE Strategy Guide; I have both for Final Fantasy XII & Metal Gear Solid 4. With limiting the number of games I buy now, then too do I limit how much extra money I spend. I have no further plans to cop out the extra cash for any upcoming CE's as of right now.But the only games i plan on buying the next possibly two quarters are LittleBigPlanet, & Resistance 2. With no incentive to expend any effort of any sort of CE for either.

You're a fool if you buy collector editions. Obviously it's just a poor scam to get you to dish out more money. And for what? A poster? Making of movie? Figurine? That's all crap.

That was very well said!

I don't think I have a collectors game at all, the only collector item is the games I look after and choose well

The only collectors edition I bought was for Halflife 2 and I only bought it because it was on sale and less expensive than the regular version.

It came with a shitty t-shirt which had a HL2 logo on it; after washing it twice the logo was gone, and then all i had was a shitty black t-shirt

The CE was invented to get more of your money because of piracy.

I was at work and noticed that the Infinite Discovery CE had a metallic looking cover, pretty fucking classy.
For CEs, for games and movies, it all comes down to what is in the CE. One of the deciding factors is a t-shirt. Soul Calibur IV came with a t-shirt and some other decent stuff so that was worth it to me. Nine times out of ten, if it's a game or movie I am paying for, if it comes with a cool looking shirt, I will get the CE.

I always get CE's when available. I feel like I'm missing out on something if I don't. I lead an empty life, but my wallet is always full .

The metal cases are what draw my roommate to them quite often. He has quite a few CE's and I must admit they do look nice all lined up and displayed and whatnot. Since we became roommates we've started splitting the cost on games we preorder so we've got the CE Fable 2 (Rip off now I know) CE Fallout 3 and he wants to get the UCE of Dead Space which runs about 150 bucks. To that one I said "Fuck you." so he's gonna take 30 of my dollars and pay the rest himself for the CE. Foolish asshole :P
