| Games People Play Games People Play is where to discuss personal computer, video game console, and arcade hardware and software - be it RPG, Sim, Strategy, Fighting, Action/Platform, or any other category. Although discussion of modern platforms/software will most likely dominate, discussion of classic videogame/computer hardware and software is always enjoyable, and certainly welcome - ESPECIALLY since there are public domain/shareware emulators of nearly every older computer/console available these days. Here's a taste of what awaits you: Nintendo-vs-Sega-vs-Sony, Console-vs-PC-vs-Mac, Hardware spec sheets/information, Industry news and discussion, Software reviews, IRC conference announcements/Reports, Emulators, Emulators, Emulators! ... and much, much more! |

Beyond the 360, PS3, and Wii.
Between the console wars thread and Snoopy's curiosity regarding the post-Wii Nintendo, I thought that a thread would be in order concerning predictions of the upcoming eighth video gaming generation. If the mods wish for this discussion to be integrated into the console wars thread, I understand.
Here are some thoughts I'd like to offer:
PS4: Personally I would love to see this console be backwards compatible more than a decade all the way to those games released on the PSone. Let me use my PS2 controller, and no, I don't need it to be wireless. Take out the Blu-Ray shit, or at least make it an optional add-on, I don't need it. Have a reasonably sized built-in hard drive, but I'd like to be able to use memory cards to take my shit to a friend's house. Oh, and please convince Konami to re-release Suikoden and the first sequel to that series.
X-Box 720: Work on decreasing the failure rate to one more in line with the consumer electronics industry. Backwards compatibility with all original X-Box and 360 games, or at least a Virtual Console style system of downloading those original titles. The ability to use my non-wireless Controller S, because the original X-Box controller was a fucking hulking monstrosity meant for beating someone with in a street fight as a blunt object.
Nintendo #6: I'm calling it the no. six because that'll be the Nintendo home console generation we're considering. A controller as ergonomic as that of the GameCube would be nice, and give me an extra-long cord, not wireless capabilities. Continue the Virtual Console shop but try to include such third-party games as GoldenEye, and network 'em so that I can kick my friend's ass in the Complex at 3 a.m. while I'm in Ohio and he's in Georgia. Give me enough Hard-Drive space to store all those games, or an add-on so that I can download them to a detachable unit and take 'em over to a friend's house and play.
So, I'd love to hear what you all have to say/predict/want/etc.!

Re: Beyond the 360, PS3, and Wii.
I'm looking forward to Nintendo's new console. So far they've been the innovative ones, or at least bringing old ideas, refining them and putting them in the market.
The next gen PS and Xbox will just be the same thing: more pure raw power, nothing innovative.
As far as Blu-ray, I think by the time the next gen is out the price will have dropped significantly and they'll probably be standard.
I wish one of them would stop being such tight asses and let people develop for them... cheaper at least. THAT would be cool.

Re: Beyond the 360, PS3, and Wii.
Games on Nintendo consoles = a huge ocean of shit with a few gems here and there.
Also, REHASHAN
Ps4 and Xbox720 will probably be equal in terms of quality and games.
I sure hope the next Xbox doesn't have that much technical problems as the 360 used to have.
Backwards compatibility should be mandatory for every new console.

Re: Beyond the 360, PS3, and Wii.
I'm posting here to vent about a pet peeve of mine. People calling it the "Xbox 720" or the "Wii 2". WHY THE FUCK DO YOU THINK THEY WILL NAME IT THIS?
There was the Genesis,Saturn and the Dreamcast. The Xbox and Xbox 360. Nintendo 64,Gamecube,and Wii. Notice I didn't say the "Xbox 2" or "Gamecube 2". Why? Because that's how Sony labels their consoles, nobody else. JESUS FUCK. Is it that hard to say "the next Xbox system"? Is it really? The reason they called it the 360 is because the experience "circles and involves" the gamer completely, aka 360 degrees, not just because they felt like throwing a fucking number in front of it. That's SONY,not MICROSOFT or ANYONE ELSE.
I will buy everyone on this console the next system if it's called the "Xbox 720"
I don't even know why I get so mad about this, but it's just something that sets me off when I read it and always has. Seriously, what the fuck does "Xbox 720" even MEAN?!?! Are you going to use the next system as a fucking skateboard as well?!

"X-Box 720" vs. "the next X-Box system" -- typing the former saves me approximately one dozen keystrokes!
No, really. I understand your aggravation, and while I don't expect the next Microsoft console to be labeled as the 720, it's merely a matter of convenience for discussion at the moment.

Re: Beyond the 360, PS3, and Wii.
funny. now that I think about it, I can't think of any fallbacks to the PS3. besides range of games at the moment.
BluRay is mandatory, man. it's the format of the games...not optional. hard disk space? 80GB is plenty. way more than enough. if you need more, buy an external hard drive. memory card? you have a large group to choose from: SD/mini SD, flash drive, external HDD; all sorts of shit. controller cord? you don't have to go through 8 AA's a week with this; it's got it's own rechargable battery pack, and charges right off the console through USB/miniUSB.
nothing is pushed on you. if you want to use something, it doesn't even have to be labeled "Sony". hell, I've used dualshock ripoff PC controllers on my PS3.
while none of these are THE (or A) reason to buy one -- as far as a gaming console, things really couldn't get much more convenient than the PS3.

Buddy!
Only the 40gb doesn't have backwards compatibility. All the other ones can play PS and PS2 games. How is Blu-Ray shit? Don't you have an HDTV? Storage issues are already apparant on the 360's DVDs. BD gives you a ton more space. What's the dif between PS2 controllers and Dualshock3's? Hard drives are "reasonably sized" (at least bigger than 360 non-elites) and they can be replaced easily. PS3 also takes all memory cards.
Shit, Sony needs to up its marketing game. People really don't know about all the great little features that make the PS3 such a polished system.

Gotta have some space for dreamtime..
Anyway I wouldn't worry too much about the whole horsepower issue. I mean the PC is always there for that, isn't it. A hot little testing bed..

Re: Beyond the 360, PS3, and Wii.
I don't believe Nintendo is gonna make it to 6.
As for the next latest and greatest console I have an idea.
The shape of thing would be a black pyramid as tall as the ps3 or xbox 360, vertical. The pyramid would glow a rainbow of colors, with lights in-between the layer of the pyramid. It would glow through a white colored design, when off, that the customer can choose between from. The games would be tiny digital cubes that would be used by flipping the point of the pyramid off and inserting it in. It would have all major things like wifi and blu-ray disc at the bottom of it. The cables would come out of the back, and connect to the tv. ©
Any thoughts?
