| Games People Play Games People Play is where to discuss personal computer, video game console, and arcade hardware and software - be it RPG, Sim, Strategy, Fighting, Action/Platform, or any other category. Although discussion of modern platforms/software will most likely dominate, discussion of classic videogame/computer hardware and software is always enjoyable, and certainly welcome - ESPECIALLY since there are public domain/shareware emulators of nearly every older computer/console available these days. Here's a taste of what awaits you: Nintendo-vs-Sega-vs-Sony, Console-vs-PC-vs-Mac, Hardware spec sheets/information, Industry news and discussion, Software reviews, IRC conference announcements/Reports, Emulators, Emulators, Emulators! ... and much, much more! |

Nintendo's next console.
I was wondering about where Nintendo will be going in the next generation. I know it's a bit too soon for that now, but the Wii has been out now for what? 2 years?
Anyway, clearly Nintendo is back on top with the Wii, after they somewhat got left behind with the GameCube. Personally, I believe the GameCube was a better console than the Wii. Still though, the Wii has got some kickass games. Irrelevant of what your opinion might be on the whole motion crap. Personally, I'm not that much of a fan of the Wiimote. It's a nice idea, but in the end it's the games that make the difference and I'm glad to see Nintendo still making high quality games that haven't lost their soul and feel.
On the other hand, I somewhat fear for Nintendo's next console. With an awesome marketing campaign for the Wii, big N has attracted a lot of new people. People who weren't Nintendo fans to begin with. I see a lot of these people now being disappointed because they bought the damn console for its motion technology. Obvious fact that anyone who would do that is an idiot. I see people in the future being more skeptical of Nintendo products because of this. And I see people raising their eyebrows the next time Nintendo comes out with something "revolutionary".
Which brings us to the point. What do you think Nintendo's next gen console will be like? Nintendo was always hard to predict. I'd love to see them go back to basics, and bringing out a console like the N64. With revolutionary gimmicks that are geared towards the fans, and not elderly people who want to play bowling on their tvs. I do realize that Nintendo would need a miracle to beat Sony and Microsoft in the area of graphics, and that they probably will never again be the market leader in terms of sheer graphical quality. But just small gimmicks that make the games more fun, without being too much out there like the Wiimote.
Also, they should redo the VirtualBoy....

Hells yes.
My stupid prediction for Nintendo's next console? K.
It will be more like the Wii, not a console like the Gamecube.
I see the new system being at a level close to the 360, another case of being a generation behind.
The controller will be an upgraded Wiimote with a good quality microphone and speaker, and a button that activates wireless headset mode. It will contain the WiiMotion, no need for external add-ons.
No disc drive, there is a HD and a SD card slot built into each system. All games will be downloaded via WiiWare (which will be expanded to allow for larger games).
The browser will be either Firefox 3 or Google Chrome. The email portion will work with Animal Crossing, allowing you to send to email addresses OR AC towns OR friend codes.
They will introduce a online system that is a clone of Live, supporting the Mii system and the WiiSpeak system ingame.
They will also try to get more developers/publishers involved, and cater a bit more towards "classic fans", not just the Nintenoobs.
Those are my predictions.

Re: Nintendo's next console.
I can't even imagine Nintendo's next console because to me personally, they have SO MUCH they haven't done with this one. Where are the 3rd party exclusives at? You can tell this generation people are tired of the same re-hashed franchises when you look at Mario Kart Wii and Halo 3.
The games themselves aren't BAD games, but how long can you just keep beating your franchises into the ground? Look at games like Smash Brothers Brawl,Mario Kart Wii, and so on. The only people that haven't moved on from those yet are the people who ONLY own a Wii. I got Mario Kart and was bored of it within a week because it was basically the same shit with ripped tracks from older games and added motorcycles. Yet,if EA did this, people would be ripping them a new asshole.
I'm not trying to take a shit on Nintendo, but when you bring up their next system I can't even imagine it considering how little the Wii has done for me as an overall experience out of the 3 systems.

Cool. I feel the same way about the current generation. While all 3 systems have cool games, it is in fact more of the same. I own them all and I haven't played any of em in the last month. Been mostly replaying old PC games and Eve Online.
I am however eager to find out what the next generation will be like. Simply because there haven't been any great moments in the console world since the Dreamcast. It's time for something that will make us all wet our panties. I don't care what it is, and I don't even care anymore who's it from. Just as long as it gets here.

Re: Nintendo's next console.
My main complaint about the Wii is the motion sensitive remote being required for all but two games. It's fun sometimes, but it's not all that great for me hanging out by myself at 3 a.m. Hopefully they'll revert to a GameCube-type controller, which I maintain is the most ergonomic video game controller ever.
Outside of Nintendo I'm just hoping for a superbly reliable X-Box compatible with 360 and original games. Not too concerned about a PS4 as the PS3 isn't of much interest to me.

Cool to see someone else who likes the GameCube controller. I too love it. Not as much as the Dreamcast controller, but it is a close second. The only thing bothering me about the DC controller is the fact that the cable is on the wrong side. I know that this is because of the VMU but still.
I'm starting to accept the Xbox little by little in the console world, as I was very much against it when Microsoft first introduced a console of their own on the market. They should however put more care in the quality control.
Sony has made a couple of big mistakes with the PS3. One of which is the fact that they weren't able to hold on to the exclusive rights to GTA. With simultaneous release on the PS3 and the 360, the choice was obvious. 360 was released earlier and more people owned the 360. Now people didn't have to buy the PlayStation just so they could play a GTA game. Also, it's too fucking expensive. I got mine for free and love it, but I would have never bought it myself.

The Gamecube controller is the best next to the PS2.

Re: Nintendo's next console.
I agree that this is kinda jumping the gun considering the Wii hasn't even reached it's full potential (nor has the 360 or PS3) and there's still a lot more she has to offer.
As far as the Wii's controls I've always felt that it's a bit of a gimmick in a way. Many of the methods used to implement the unique controls end up taking away from the overall experience and often feel as if they're wedged in to the game at the last moment..even though it should be top priority. The quality Wii titles, however, do a fine job of using the motion sensing to their advantage..even if the execution seems repetitive and mundane at times (IE attacking in Twilight Princess). I hope they don't nail themselves down to this idea though. I feel that a console should be held up by the quality of it's games rather than a gimmicky peripheral that lets you swing it around like a fool. Maybe have the motion sensing as a secondary option would be alright but not focused on even close to as much as it is now. That'd be a step in a happy direction for me personally.
As far as the GC controller I've always loved it as well. My only gripes are that the Z button sometimes seems like you aren't actually pressing it and the very tiny D-pad that is made for 3 year old's fingers. The shape/grooves of the controller itself (such as the L and R buttons) always felt like they were designed perfectly for the average person's hand and was ultimately very comfortable. As far as the C stick went I could have taken it as the N64 did it or not..either way has it's ups and downs.

As much as I love the N64, many of its games, etc., I must say that the controller, although I am used to it, is probably one of the WORST controller designs ever, in that you have to take your hand off of one part of the unit to access, for instance, the L-trigger or D-Pay.

Conversely, I loathed the Gamecube controller. It felt too cheap; the c-stick SUCKED for me, probably because I have larger hands, and overall it failed in comparison to the N64 controller.
But yes, the PS2 controller is singehandedly the best controller. Evar. If I could hook it up to my 360, I would.
