Re: So I want to grow and sell tomatoes
not knowing your location it's hard to say.
but if it's in a shed i'm making the assumption you are under grow lights, as a shed has a roof blocking out the sun.
don't waist you time and money on a hydro set up, go o'natural the money saved on hydro you can spend on a natural compost/fertilizer set up
in the citys with all the trendy yuppys they will pay top dollar for organic.
you would have to look into your circumstances but most farm land needs to be chemical free for 5 years before you can clam organic produce.
If your in a shed you could ship in dirt and go form there
I'm unsure on the lighting factor, but if's not a factor you can be vegin 24/7.
as with any business it comes down to the math, power usage, set up costs, sale price, X years to break even after that your sitting pretty.
edit....getting off track, I do that some times :P
talk to your local green grocer or restaurants
take a heap to your local markets even, put an add in the paper

Re: So I want to grow and sell tomatoes
Grow those tiny little tomatos.
I think it could be possible to grow a small range of fruits etc that you could then pack on a polystyrene tray under shrinkwrap.
You could sell then as 'healthy snack food' thatcould be eaten during their work day.
Some fruit ideas, Please someone else come up with some good ideas too.
Tiny tomatoes, Grapes, Carrots, small Cheese blocks, Celery.
Fejoas, small apples? Berrys, etc..

Re: So I want to grow and sell tomatoes
1 word: tomacco
Not a joke! Tomatoes and tobacco come from plants in the same family. Grafting a tomato onto tobacco roots is possible and it has been done (Google tomacco). The tomacco contains nicotine and people have eaten it with no ill side effects. I can imagine it being promoted as a way to get people to quite smoking. There is a lot of money to be made in tomacco and I might start trying to make tomacco next week.

Re: So I want to grow and sell tomatoes
Okay, I just wanted to point out... The tiny tomatoes you are talking about are called "Roma" tomatoes.
AKA, Tommy Toes.
Believe it or not, but the tomato business is very demanding. Espically in the winter. Grocery stores are ALWAYS needing them, and looking for the lowest prices. I work in the produce section of a major chain, and its just me and my brother in the produce (My brother is the manager of produce.) And I have talked to the tomato guy, and he said the shortage is rising due to winter coming up.
So, the conclusion is that you should try hydroponics and sell them to grocery store chains. They go crazy over them!

This, while it is possible to get mini roma tomatoes, roma tomatoes are about the same size as a normal tomato only long.

Re: So I want to grow and sell tomatoes
I don't really know...but I do know that away from the equator, eg: anywhere it can drop way below freezing with ease & Winter days are short, it isn't very economical.
BC Hothouse are fairly big with the growing of toms & pepps. I believe that even in the warmer coastal climes of the Fraser Valley & their economies of scale? In Winter they use their greenhouses in SoCal/NoMex to provide the goods. So unless you live in those climes in the cold times?
In Summer? Well there isn't really a shortage, other than this one just past with the salmonella scare.
Have you costed it all out? If you do it & are reliable. Perhaps you might have a local restaurant buy them?
"Why are there occasionally products from mexico or the usa in the grocery store?
In the winter months it is extremely difficult to grow produce due to the lack of light. Light is the biggest component in producing fruits and vegetables (photosynthesis). Additionally, colder growing conditions mean high heating expenses which drastically increase the cost of the product to the consumer.
During this time, BC Hot House aligns itself with quality greenhouse growers in Mexico and the United States. These growers produce product for our customers to our exact standards (grade standards, quality control, food safety, etc.), keeping the product offering consistent with what we produce locally during our growing season. This is done so our customers receive product that is of the highest level on a consistent year round basis.
Our organization is 100% BC Grower owned, all located in the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. Ownership of the company remains with our BC based growers / shareholders."
