Default hydroponic growing for my senior project

So, at my school we have to do this research project in our senior year, and for mine i'll be hydroponically growing some plants.

ill be growing cherry tomatoes and lettuce for my project, but of course i'm going to be growing some "herbs" for myself on the side.

my question is, whats the most effective setup that i could reasonably build, without some outrageous cost?

i really would like to design one like Omega Gardens has, but so far i havent found anyone thats built anything similar themselves.

any advice or links you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

We have to do something similar... i wanted to do a bit of organic chemistry but they bitched that an average high school student couldn't do it... which is a load of bullshit, i didn't even want to do anything very dangerous, or at least nothing worse than what i was doing in chemistry in the 10th grade...

I have now moved onto Pharmacy as my topic..

as far as hydroponics go i dont have much experience other than "germinate and grow a bean sprout in a ziplock bag with a paper towel soaked in water".... oh the useful things they taught us in elementary school... "now remember that many seeds can be germinated this way kids, it might come in handy one day when you all turn into potheads"

You could build one of those Omega set ups yourself for a few hundred bucks. I dont know if thats out of your price range, but its be pretty cool.

You might check the marijuana grow thread in TGO, i think they talk about hydroponics there.

if you want to build one yourself it shouldnt bee too hard, but the folks in DIY can help if you need it.

Growing questions, particularly those of an almost legal nature, go in The Great Outdoors. And so shall this.

Aeroponics is not good for new guys from what I've heard.

Stick to a simple ebb and flow system.

How much money are you working with?

So i think i'm going to make myself a few bubble buckets, being that they fall well within both my price and space limitations.

Bubble Bucket

What i need to know about now is:
What lighting setup should I use?
What sort of nutrient solution should I use?
and, Is there any way i could run multiple buckets from a single air pump?

Some air pumps have 2 holes for air, but you may be able to get a bigger one with more holes and more power to run more then 1.

There was one http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=13327, which is basically the same, but it uses a circular ceramic air stone, instead of 2(and it looks much simpler)
