Topic is pretty self explanatory. I am out of weed right now, trying to get a little high and have a shit load of resin caked in my bowl, I usually scratch out the resin. Is there a better way than scratching?

There are quite a few different methods. What kind of bowl is it? For future reference, metal pipes seem to hold resin far better than glass and tend to be a bit easier to get the resin out of.

Method 1: Take a paper clip and bend it out. Heat up the tip of it and begin. Use something like a card (ID, Library card or W/E) to scrape the resin on to. After you've got enough make a little ball out of it, mix with tobacco if you like and enjoy.

Method 2: Toss the pipe in a ziploc with some iso-alcohol and shake. Once the pipe is clean pour the liquid into some tupperware and let it evaporate overnight. This method is generally used to just get the pipe clean but I have smoked the resin after it was good and dry. Some people use a bit of salt with the alcohol to get the resin to come off easier..I don't recommend that though.

If your pipe is strong enough to withstand it, throw it in a pot of water and turn your stove on medium to medium-high. Boil it for an hour. 30 minutes should do it, though. Then take a bowl strainer and throw a paper towel inside it. Remove the cleaned pipe and pour the water into the strainer. The water will filter out and you'll have a shit ton of resin collected by the paper towel. Gather it up, press it into a ball, and smoke.

It will make sparks when you first light it :)

i've found the most efficent way, get spun and attack with paper clips and knives...

i wouldn't throw it in boiling water, and the alcohol thing kinda would screw you if you wanted to smoke the shit now, ya know? so work for your high and get scrappin..

You're very right, scraping works. But boiling is most efficient. There's a very slim chance of your pipe breaking. The only way you'll break it is if it goes from too cold to hot, or vice versa. Or if you dropped it right after boiling. Since the pipe gradually warms up to heat, and gradually cools down, it's all good. I've done this with so many pipes, it's now my preferred method. I used to do the alcohol before, but cleaning the pipe afterward was a hassle.

my pipe won't break, it's a serious double blown spoon, i've dropped this bastard on concrete and it won't die. One of the best pick ups i have made, only 25 bucks, I found that going to a tobacco store will give you better bowls for a cheaper price as opposed to going to the head shops where everyone i know has gotten ripped off

anyways, i'm gonna go at it with a knife, i don't have the patience to boil, or wait for the alcohol to evaporate..

If it's glass take a paperclip with the tip heated to it. If it's anything like ones I've had in the past a knife isn't going to be able to really get in there like a clip would.

I tend to use the alcohol idea...

Evaporate if off over time but if time is an issue i use a hot water bath, or break out the lava lamp...

Alcohol solution goes onto a plate, plate is sat on top of the metal base of a lava lamp. the heat from the light evaporates the alcohol off without an open flame. the light is turned off periodically to keep it from getting to ~400 degrees... once almost all of it is evaped, a scrape it with a card until the plate is pretty clean, put the resin ball in the middle to evaporate any remaining alcohol off...

I hear light breaks down THC and everything but i have had good results... if that worries you, dont use a clear plate... find some glass that the light wont pass through, or put a square of aluminum between the light and the plate to block the light...

oh and ventilation is good, try to have a fan of some sort going to keep it from building up... no open flame or sparks around where your doing this... bad things happen around solvent vapors and flames...

Boiling sucks. It doesnt get much of the resin out at all. It takes too much effort and the resin is difficult to collect afterwards.

Iso is by far the best method for cleaning your pipe, but the resin you collect is unsmokeable IMO. no matter how long you evap it for it will always taste like chemical death.

If your intention is just to get high, then scraping is just about your only viable option. It wont get your piece clean, but it'll get you through the night. So make like a crackhead and scrape that shit son!

speaking of which i think i'll go scrape my own..

I use grain alcohol at about 96%, plug up the carb, bowl and mouthpiece with crumpled up TP after pouring in the alchy. I shake it up for a bit, leave it for 15 or so minutes with occaisional shaking. Take out the tp paper plugs and i pour onto aluminum foil. Wait 15-25 minutes (if you aren't heating it) and smoke that shit like heroin using some rolled up paper and a lighter. start at the edges and work your way around. Gets me baked as fuck when I'm low on weed.

well I used the scraping method, as i usually do. next time I do this i'll use the alcohol method when i have more time.

I used a small drill bit to chip out the resin.
Then just put it on a clean gauze in a pipe & smoke it again.
or wrap it in Ali foil & spot it, or 'Chase the dragon' on foil.

I tried using IPA to dissolve the resin/tar shit & then evaporated the IPA off.
But I think something happens to it chemicaly, have no idea what it could be, but the resin tasted like shit & didn't do anything.
Tried it twice to make sure, so I'm suggesting don't do it, I'm not anyway.
Theres better ways...

If its a metal pipe you can attach a plastic hose to the pipe & then heat it up on a gas stove & once the resin starts boiling, inhale thru the hose,that works REAL well.

Every time you scrape your piece with a paperclip, knife, or other metal, you're doing irreversible damage. It makes small scratches in the glass that catch resins and are even more difficult to clean. Does the same thing to metal. It's why Space Case includes those small plastic picks with their grinders.

'Cuz you have to wash the alcohol out of your pipe. With boiling, all you do is collect the resin and smoke it right away. You don't have to evaporate anything, you don't have to clean your pipe after cleaning your pipe, and you don't have to masturbate, Pippy Longstocking..

You can blow out the excess in under a minute. Don't light that shit though, depending on the shape of the piece, and the fuel to air ratio, you just might end up with bong shrapnel in your face. Actually, yeah, do that.

i just run warm water through it afterward.... shake the water out and just let dry...

Do this. Leave the ziplock bag pinned to a wall for a few days and shake it every few hours. After the alcohol is jet black and your bowl looks more or less clear, snip the lowest corner of the bag and let it drain into a glass pan or dish. Wait a few days for it to dry and then scrape the resin off the glass with a razor blade. If it's still moist, let it dry for a few more days because that's the water in the alcohol that didn't evap yet. Get the highest precent isopropyl alcohol possible.

It basicly moves the resin from the inside walls of your piece to a flat accessible surface.

So what happens if you used 50% Isopropyl alcohol? Does that mean half the liquid that needs to evaporate is water? That sucks...

Right, and it wouldn't be as effective. Aim for 95+% isopropyl alcohol. 99% if you can get it.

I heat up the pipe instead of the clip. One, it gets makes the resin a LOT softer and easier to scrape, and two, when you heat the paper clip instead you're just burning a lot of the reason.
