Politics: Left, Right, and Center National, state, regional, and local politics. Who's doing what to whom, and what you can do about it. How-to-get-action messages are encouraged. "How the government fucked up my life" stories are encouraged. Sharing new methods for cheating on taxes is encouraged. Sample "letters to congresscritters" are encouraged. Apathy and "I can't do anything" posts are discouraged. Left, right, centrist, or any other form of political-economic systems are all up for discussion. Be prepared to defend yourself, or at least have a good line of bullshit ready. Extensive quoting of economists and philosophers is frowned upon. We want to hear what YOU have to say, not what some constipated, impotent, dead guy dreamt up while suffering from the DT's over a hundred years ago thought.

Exclamation Seven Hundred Billion You Say?

That's a lot of money.

If you weren't aware...

$700,000,000,000

Oh hey, by the way did you guys know that there are ~304,865,108 people living in the US of A?

So, just for fun, let's do a little math here.

Let's try a word problem: Seven hundred billion pigs are in Farmer Brown's Barn. There are about three hundred four million eight hundred sixty five thousand one hundred and eight people living in the town. If Farmer Brown decided to equally divide his pigs among all the people in town got an equal number of pigs, how many would each person get?

Thoughts?

700 000 000 000 / 304 865 108 = 2 296.09746

Thumbs down Re: Seven Hundred Billion You Say?

I say we bail out the people that are hurting, not give golden parachutes to the greedy sons of bitches who tossed the whole pie out the window because they wanted a bigger piece.

Or better yet, let's have the government not spend money it doesn't have. Where's the $700B coming from? It's not like we scraped off a few dollars from our "being the world's policeman" program. We're just digging the hole deeper and deeper.

Yes, they are spending 700b and just throwing the assets away. Wow, you're so intelligent. Maybe you could take a finance class and learn how these things work. Fuck, you dumb peasants!

yup, that would buy an awful lot of beer. All of this over a mortgage crisis. So lets get this straight. Billybob buys a house at 3% interest for, lets say five years, excellant. then shock, oh my god, my interest is now 11% because some greedy son of a bitch wants more money and I was to stupid to read the fine print. Of course this didn't just happen to poor old billybob but to an awful lot of others and not just in the us but around the world. So why did the bankers (the have's) not just drop the interest when they realized that oops, a lot of people are going default on their loans. oh yeah, that would be because they all gave themselves massive year end bonuses (tens of millions). Now they wine and whimper to the political dweebs who are also big investors in the markets for a huge bailout at the havenot's expense. God I love globalization and no money, because this did not affect me in any way possible. Yes my RRSPs have dropped, so what, in a few years they will probably be stronger than they are now. The only ones that are taking a big hit are the big investors and the bankers, cry me a fucking river you greedy bastards. You Americans should be screaming bloody murder and should lynch a few politicians if the money is issued to wall street. Because where was this money for health care or education or low cost housing?

700 000 000 000 / 304 865 108 = 2 296.09746

And if it were given only to the taxpayers we would each get over 5000.

The way I understand it is banks gave mortages to people who could barely pay the 3%, but did so anyway under the assumption that real estate prices would continue to rise and thus billybob would have a fat stack of capital that the bank could levy interest against in the long run. The problem is so many people are building houses that real estate didn't increase the way it was predicted and now billybob and his millions of analogs actually don't have jack shit as their one big capital sink just lost money instead of gained it.

700 Billion on it's own is not a lot of money when you consider the assets that are been purchased... But when you add that to the 600 billion of credit they've already injected into the market (created out of thin air) and the blank check they wrote for fannie freddie (possibly another trillion there) - You're looking at a very long depression for the green back... And I think that's a high price to pay for the illiquid assets on offer...

Perfect move by Bush really because if the democrats do get in, it will take years to fix. By which time the united stupid of America would have forgotten about it and will vote for another republican because he's a fundamental wackjob...

I honestly can not believe how fucking stupid and reckless US policy makers can be. It's like the entire nation fell asleep for 8 years and didn't fucking care because they were earning big money. And now everybody has to pay for it...

DEAR SIR,

URGENT AND CONFIDENTIAL BUSINESS PROPOSAL

I AM MINISTRY OF THE TREASURY OF THE REPUBLIC OF AMERICA. MY COUNTRY HAS HAD CRISIS THAT HAS CAUSED THE NEED FOR LARGE TRANSFER OF FUNDS OF 700 BILLION DOLLARS (700 000 000 000 DOLLARS) US. IF YOU WOULD ASSIST ME IN THIS TRANSFER, IT WOULD BE MOST PROFITABLE TO YOU.

THEREFORE, I NEED AN URGENT HELP FROM YOU AS A MAN OF GOD TO HELP GET THIS MONEY TRANSFERED TO SAVE THE COUNTRY. THIS MONEY, AFTER GETTING TRANSFERED, WOULD BE SHARED ACCORDING TO THE PERCENTAGE AGREED BY BOTH OF US. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS MATTER IS STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL AS THE CONGRESS IS STILL UNDER SURVAILLANCE TO PROBE US.

PLEASE REPLY WITH ALL OF YOUR BANK ACCOUNT, IRA AND COLLEGE FUND ACCOUNT NUMBERS AND THOSE OF YOUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN TO WALLSTREETBAILOUT@TREASURY.GOV SO THAT WE MAY TRANSFER YOUR COMMISSION FOR THIS TRANSACTION. AFTER I RECEIVE THAT INFORMATION, I WILL RESPOND WITH DETAILED INFORMATION ABOUT SAFEGUARDS THAT WILL BE USED TO PROTECT THE FUNDS.

THANKS AND BEST REGARD

People living beyond their means. Buying shit they can't afford and being encouraged to spend more and more by commercials and media .etc

Big businesses and mass media have obviously proven they aren't looking out for the benefit of anyone, just themselves, and will take your country under if it means they'll make a quick buck.

They should just divide all that $700B up amongst everyone so we can all have coke and sex parties at least.
I can see it now:
Candidate A: "I promise to bring this country stability."
Candidate B: "I'm gonna give everybody cash and drugs."

Guess who wins!
