Default Betta Fish question

Most of you will probably see this as a really stupid question but whatever... So i got a Betta for free. I made him a home in a rather spacious Jack Daniels bottle(compared to one of those small ass Betta bowls.) Anyway I wanna keep the bottle top on but I wanna make sure there's enough oxygen in the tank(the water need oxygen correct?) Someone mention that they make tablets to put in the water to get around this, it sounded kind of far fetched though, so I dunno. Any thoughts would be well appreciated. Thanks.

Even with the cap off, I don't know if enough oxygen would get in the water. You can get a little air pump and some tubing to make a bubbler thing, and maybe even drill a hole through the top so you can keep the appearance...?
I guess it just depends on how dedicated you are to this design.

since you've helped me in other threads [although you probably dont remember]...

I've had my betta for about 6 months now in a 5 gallon tank. quite spacious for him and the lid is open. Since you plan on leaving the lid open, i supposed it'd be fine since there would still be air circulating above the water. Now, if you closed it, the only air left would be the one between the cap and where the water starts, and the betta is sure to gobble it up. Bettas dont need oxygen pumps to survive. As you mentioned, they rise to the surface to catch air, which is where the bubbles they make come from. So yea, if you leave the cap open it should be fine, but either way, dont be cheap and get them a 5 dollar bowl. Even a pickle jar'll do

PS: what do you mean they "make tablets to put in the water?"

Post Re: Betta Fish question

they make tabs that put oxygen in the water
betas don't need that, they can live in any old shit as long as there is some air exchange at the surface of the water.
If he puts a cap on the bottle there will be no exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide, its the carbon dioxide build up in the bottle that would kill the fish(if its not dead already)You can add oxygen all fucking day long but if there is no way to dump the carbon dioxide your little fish is a dead fish

Those "oxygen tablets" are for extending the amount of time fish have in the bag when you buy them from the store, not for long term use as a means of putting O2 in the water. You need to keep the cap off so at least some gas exchange can occur. You'll also want to change the water in the bottle 2-3x a week, otherwise your betta will be floating and not swimming.

Does this 2-3x-water-change-per-week only apply to bottles like StarWarsNerd is using, or to tanks like mine too? If it does apply my tank too, i usually leave my betta in the same water for about a month or so and he doesnt seem to "float." In fact, whenever i pass by, he assumes im gonna feed him and swims to where i usually drop the food. But ive never heard of fish floating due to lack of water change. Excuse my ignorance if im wrong, but just explain this a little better

StarWarsNerd: Man, my photography has come to a halt! With school and work now, i barely have anytime for anything. I used to see my gf 4-5x a week in the summer, and now im lucky if i get 1-2x per. Sucks. My cam has just been sitting there for the longest. Plus, im also trying to save up so i can get a better cam in the future. When that time comes, ill be sure to post in A&D and you better help out Btw, hows the fish doing? And did you name him/her yet?

Ya his name is Jack, cause he resides in a Jack Daniels bottle.
I'm probably going to change the water with in the next few days so i'll get a picture of him in his home.
