Religulous
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdkyLrDpaUg
I haven't seen it yet but I just read a review (below) and the reason this guy (and I feel the majority of people) aren't going to like this movie is because Maher comes off as "smug" and condescending...
But what the fuck do these people expect? In a country where the potential Vice President claims that United States military action is "an act of God" and the idea of an Atheist President is an oxymoron what the fuck should Maher do? Be nice? Fuck that. Put these worthless religious troglodytes in there place and shit all over there dangerous moronic beliefs in anyway possible...
I haven't seen it and it seems like that's what he does based off of reviews...And because he doesn't approach the idea with kindness and decency the movie lacks according to people??? Fuck them and fuck that idea.
In a country where religion dominates every aspect of life and forces itself upon others as divine truth the least it deserves is Bill Maher being a patronizing asshole.

Re: Religulous
I'm quite excited for such, Maher is a personal hero of mine.
I saw a study not too long ago concerning academic achievement and church attendance; correspondingly, those with higher educations and I.Q.s were generally less likely to attend church or believe in the big unfriendly guy in the sky.

Re: Religulous
I would have been let down if he WASN'T a patronizing asshole. It's really the only honest approach he could take.

Re: Religulous
It looks funny, but loses points just for using a Limp Bizkit song to promote it.

Re: Religulous
I just got free movie tickets from a tobacco company so I might see this or wait for something I definitely want to see.
Maher being a patronizing asshole is usually fun as arguing about religion seems to have gotten duller and duller as I age. Plus I haven't actually seen him do anything since watching Politically Incorrect years ago.

Re: Religulous
Being patronizing is only a huge problem if you're wrong. Look at Mancow or O' Reilly. They're assholes, which is fine in and of itself, but they're also usually wrong about whatever they're talking about.
Of course, patronizing people isn't an effective way to make them stop being idiots, but...it's fun.

Re: Religulous
I'm exited about this movie as well and I like Maher regardless of our opposing views in the political arena. He's got the perfect 'tude for this sort of movie and his smugness is what makes watching him entertaining. Give me this over anything done by that fat fuck Michael Moore any day.

Mancow and O' Reilly work in the realm of politics, so I don't think you could say they are right or wrong, just an opinion. Politics is an art, not a science, and therefore there is no discernible truth value as such.
Anyway, to the topic as a whole, he has said in multiple interviews that he was not trying to be condescending, he was simply trying to ask questions that society as a whole sees as taboo. He sees religion as being the last widespread taboo subject that cannot be criticized. I see it as 2nd to last, behind the agricultural and monetary society itself as being the #1 taboo subject that cannot be criticized.

I agree on some of his latest movies, though Roger and Me was pretty good.
