Re: Top Gear Australia...
I've 'jotted' some quick thoughts on the show based on the premiere.
Negatives:
FAKE. The hosts, the set, everything. Don't attempt to emulate TopGear. You will fail by default - there is absolutely NO way you could not fail hard in the attempt & execution of such idiocy. Seems like a lack of foresight.
The hosts are too similar. Way too similar (and with their personalities feeling so uncomfortably forced, this was definitely a very bad thing) . When we all got on our knees and begged for hosts with chemistry, we meant they react and bounce off each other, not are the same person and don't disagree with each other at all etc. The hosts need to be polar opposites with the third as a reagent - not a total lack of distinction between each hosts onscreen (im)persona(tion).
Now, it's nowhere near the depths of fucken shite that The Car Show and other elaborate Shannons Insurance advertisment campaigns are, but it was still too nice. Show me an Aussie who holds his words and opinion back in real life and I'll eat my head. That's bullshit. Unfortunately it's slightly politically correct and manufacturer praising. At the moment it's sensible, but once the show becomes established there's no more need for it. You don't have to be a total jerk like Clarkson (that, in fact would be bad - see crosses 1 & 2), but less arse kissing and more arse kicking would improve the show immensely. It could risk relationships with manufacturers, but they can just suck it up.
Not blokey enough, either. It needs to be more Aussie. The attitude of the entire show needs to reflect this, we can't just follow the TopGear formulas and the exact same format. It needs to cater to Australia, for one, and secondly needs to be strong enough to stand on it's own - not leaning of TopGears good image. The set needs to be a pub or something, and the hosts need to have a heap of beers and tell the producers to go fuck themselves for making them copy TopGear.
Also, nowhere near enough time spent on technical information, and the tests on the cars weren't in depth at all.
Positives:
I'm sure the hosts didn't really want to attempt to emulate TopGear, but were told to. I think they'd be pretty open to change, except for the ADD kid.
Some things were pretty entertaining. That older dude totally gunned it over the dune and fucked up the front of the 4WD. Warren Brown is dork (some people find him funny), and the young guy is annoying. At least he said fuck this and acted like his ADD riddled self. The hosts can stay, they just need more energy from the soul and no ripping off. Just ripping on.
It also showed that TopGear Australia has an even better selection of vehicles which they can access than even the original TopGear. Euro cars? check. American cars? check. Most importantly Asia-Pacific cars? CHECK.
Most of all; This was just the premiere episode, the rest of the series (and I hope it doesn't die) will be a bit different, and there's plenty of time for the show to evolve and mold to our tastes. TopGear weren't shit hot in the beginning either, so we should thank SBS, BBC, and TopGear that TopGear Australia at least has a very large budget and pre-existing relationships with manufacturers and viewers through these businesses.
That doesn't really cover it, but like I said they're my quick thoughts on the show. I'll still give it a chance next week.

Re: Top Gear Australia...
The main guy shits me to no end. He is so polished and superficial, you may as well have a model hosting the show. The beauty of top gear is in it's cynisism, that the hosts cut through the bullshit and do things thier own way. The real hosts are happy to be the punchline of a joke, and after years of working together thier banter is seamless.
The australian version is just a few wankers all trying to be the most popular. All of thier car reviews were complete fucking rubbish, they basically just read out the press release from the maker, throwing in some stupid australian slang that i (thankfully) havent heard since paul hogan was around.
what the fuck was with the 4wd thing? there was no evidence of any critical thought of the problem of the cars and no originiality in the problem, it was just a few blokes having some nice wholesome G rated fun. If i was retarded enough to enjoy that i would be watching rex hunt or some shit.
SBS fucked up here, instead of creating a new twist on a well known show. I know they had a big name to live up to, but the only thing they changed were the presenters, and they chose completely pathetic one dimensional characters. It is obvious they do not get along, and there were a few attempts at gay jokes, trying to get the black haired guy to be james may.
I ended up turning it off, hopefully the pathetic attempt for a show will be cancelled.
If they wanted to buy a show from the UK, they should have done scrap heap challenge. That would be impossible to stuff up.

This show needs to be TopGear (UK) cross with Blokesworld. Now that would be good.

Re: Top Gear Australia...
I think the issue is that top gear started off as a car show. they had fast cars, mentioned technical stuff and weren't afraid to be critical of rubbish cars and upset the sponsors.
SBS doesn't want a car show. We have half a dozen or so car shows on a sunday afternoon alone. of course they are all just corporate shams and are boring as hell, but car shows are nothing new and SBS doesn't want a thing to do with them.
So they buy a car show and try and remove the cars from it. Everything is so superficial, they don't go into stats or really explore cars and they aren't supposed to. SBS wants a nice show that appeals to everyone and can justify the millions they spent on the top gear brand. People who have been watching top gear for years and proper car buffs are going to be dissapointed, but thats the corprate world.
This is all fine and good, but you need to make what is left completely flawless. The hosts need to have massive chemistry and all be examples of real australians. Think about the footy show if those three guys were running it.
In my opinion there is no excuse for the pathetic attempt we saw last night. If you wanted to rush the show out the door then you should have picked hosts with history, who already new the boundaries and got along well. Real comedic banter can take years to master, but unfortunately SBS doesn't have years. These three guys are going to fumble around with each other like a fifteen year old attempting to undo a bra for the rest of the season, and its going to be painful to watch.

Re: Top Gear Australia...
It's better than every other aussie car show that's ever existed, for the simple reason that they don't like everything.
Car show: 'wow this kia that was made for $5 and is slower than a beached container ship is a wonderful city cruiser thats cheap and economical blah fuckety blah'
