Default Your favourite lightweight apps

Something some of us strive for in the linux scene is to revive old computers, crappy laptops and make our friend's jaws drop as they see you running your old Pentium 0.5 with 15 windows open in 8 different desktops and wobbly windows... and you're only using about 200MB of RAM.

How does one accomplish that? LIGHTWEIGHT APPS! What are your favourites?

File Manager: Thunar/PCManFM
Window Manager: Openbox
Browser: Opera
Media Player: MPD (Music Player Daemon) + Sonata
Torrent: Deluge
Terminal: aterm
Word Processor: Abiword
Spreadsheet: gnumeric

Any others you'd like to mention? Any kind of program you wanna include?

I'll second PCManFM. Stupid name, good file manager. Miles beyond Thunar, in my opinion.

I've just started using LXDE and its associated apps full-time on my laptop, which is a dinky old Averatec with a whopping 128 megs of RAM, and so far it works pretty well.

Everything xfce4.* is very lightweight, both in memory and size.
I second opera.
My main laptop with everything i need, is under 2GB.

Emacs......bahahahhahahaha.

I do love Emacs but it's a fucking two-tonne beast.
I don't really use individual small apps, other than those that are made for Emacs such as Gnus for email and ERC for IRC.

Have emacs start as a daemon and just use the client functionality.

Also, Opera is non-free and really, if you want a lightweight browser, just use links, lynx, elinks, Links2, or Epiphany. I can't imagine Opera is lighter-weight than those.

Epiphany is a good browser, but in terms of weight-benefit, opera far surpasses it. There are much lighter apps than the ones I mentioned, but their un-usability and lack of features make them... too light.

I'll second Openbox for the wm. I used to use it with fbpanel and conky. With my full desktop RAM useage was about 21 MB.

I'm kind of partial to Qt apps. For a web browser, check out Arora. It uses Qt and Webkit and it pretty fast and light weight.

For a terminal, I like rxvt. Full featured with tabs and small.

Thunar is nice. I also like the ROX file manager.
